The Vintage Air heater arrived today and I have studied how the controls can be mounted on the original heater control. I just have a mock-up for now and I will need to add spacers to the controls and one of my levers is broken and will need to be replaced. The heat control rotated almost 360 degrees, so there was no way to attach it to the original controls. The knob shows where I will install the control and use the knob showing in the pictures. I will need to tap the levers where the original knobs would have been located.
I will drill and tap these tomorrow and make up the spacers and post some more pictures. The heater control will need to be installed from behind the dash and the chrome face screwed back on from the front. The light still works, but I will remove the lettering since it doesn't corresponded to any of the controls. Last edited by bmar; 12-22-2016 at 12:51 AM. |

I couldn't get enough sweep of the levers to reach all the setting on the control knobs. I needed about another half an inch in order to have all the settings... so I am back square one. I still don't really like the idea of knobs on the outside of the heater control assembly.... I wasn't that sold on just the one knob, let alone three knobs.

The heater I have is the factory cheap heater. comes with the manual defrost .
I used a carburetor that has an automatic choke. I didn't need the choke knob, soThat's where I put the heater control, and the original heater hole was filled with a blank off plate from the factory.

I wrapped the heater control with 22 gauge sheet metal and milled the ridges on the back then drilled the holes for the three knobs. I still need to sand and prime the front and I don't have any idea yet what color the dash will be.

I have the same heater in my 52. Good little heated but its so loud. The fan speeds are way too aggressive in my opinion. Everything should be cut in half and then you can leave it on #1 setting and not have it blasting away. Shame you can slow them down because its controlled by a 3 speed motor and not a single speed.

very nice mount, early in the build is when you want to weld in the mount
first thing into my cab was the va ac/heat, then back into a box for the next 6 years rob(?) at vintage air was aware of this and started the warranty when i first charged the ac

The heater can be raised up several inches into the dash, but the higher the heater goes the more pronounced the slope becomes on the firewall. I had to add a 3/8th shim on the top of the mounting bracket to have the plate level.

I couldn't find anything on airflow for the vintage air and I have only had the heater running on my workbench. Since I live in Montana, the more heat the better. The defrost is the most important for sure, but a warm cab doesn't hurt my feelings either.

The heater is installed now and hooked up to the radiator. Everything seems to be working fine and I have now moved on to the stereo and power amp.
I used the other center console bracket from a 1995 Gmc jimmy that I was putting into my truck... until I got a rod knock in my 1995 Chevy blazer. The blazer has, or had, leather seats in grey which I liked better. Here are some pictures of the stereo and the power amp install. The bezel on the stereo was cut on a plasmacam that I have access to. There is also a few pictures of some doors I got a hold of off a 1957 C6500. I had to weld patches in the bottom of the doors and the driver side door has been sprung at some time in the past and needs repairs from a really bad weld job. |
