Re: Transmission / rear end set up

Part of the reason I don't like an automatic trans in our vintage trucks is because they have to be set up juuuust exactly right, or you'll burn it out. The other thing I don't like about them is if they die, your truck is an unmoving brick. Or if your battery dies, it's an unmoving brick. With a manual trans, you can always get home. -Brad

Re: Transmission / rear end set up
That is correct. And that is one of the biggest reasons the 700R4 has a bad reputation with so many people. They refuse to do their research on the trans setup and even then refuse to set it up right away, no matter how many people tell them how to do it correctly, and right away. All to many people think it is a 'kick down' cable. It is not. It is the TV (Throttle Valve) cable. And if it is not setup and adjusted correctly just as soon as the trans is in the vehicle and operating, the trans can burn up in a short time. This is covered time and again in the Engine and Drivetrain section of this forum. Plus all of the setup info is in that section as well.

Re: Transmission / rear end set up
Just my .02¢.I had planned on a rear end swap for my 66 C20 but after putting the size tires I wanted (31"), and having a 5 speed I was totally happy even with it being a 4.56 rear end. At 80 mph it's at 2600rpm. On my 58 knowing what I now know, I went straight to a 700r4, & with 235/75/15 (28") tires the 3.90 rear end is just fine. At 80 it's right about 2600rpm as well. The point I'm getting at is you can't go wrong with an overdrive trans and the cost may be about the same. Obviously if one or the other is failing do that first but you will lose your off the line giddy up with some of those gear ratios.
