It can be. However, I broke the one I tried removing. I found this a couple months ago after I saw an ad in the NCRS "Corvette Restorer" magazine. I'd go this route in a heartbeat.

Based on the prices for a complete mirror on her eBay site, glass replacement might be reasonable.

In fact, this one looks close to te one the OP is looking for. Depends on length and, perhaps, the color of the "knuckle" part of the mount (should be black).

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

dfwright, I found a repo rear view mirror that looks like the original. Type in "car parts discount", put in 72 chevy C10 pickup and scroll down to interior and click. You'll see rear view mirror, click on that and you'll see it. If an original costs to much I think I'll go with the repo.

It's not a bad option. As might be guessed from the fact that my original is still available for me to take out of the box and take pictures -- I have a repro in mine, and it performs well. I also don't have a concourse restoration, so it was an easy choice for me.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

My cousin and I did the best job we could with the money I had restoring my truck but it wasn't any concourse restoration either. The repo mirror costs $46 bucks plus shipping. If I could get an original for around that price in good condition that would be great. If not, I'll just go with the repo. I'd be happy with that.

I purchased a restored mirror from mirror lady in the above post and it is great. You can send them your mirror and they will restore that for you. Impresessed with the one I got.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

71 sierragrande, I seen your post you sent to Fred (specialytretail) letting him know I was looking for the mirror, I sure did appreciate that. I really don't know how much he would charge for one in good condition but if it's like over a hundred I'll have to pass. I did find a new repo that looks just like the original for $46 bucks plus shipping. I'd be happy with that.

Well, he said he didn't have one, so you may have to. Looks like the one year only thing makes them quite rare

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

My bet would be if he did get one in good condition it would be more than what I could pay. I emailed him asking how much he would charge but no answer yet. I'll hold on a few days and see what happens.

He is really fair on price, but the rarity may make it high. I don't really know, but he parts these trucks regularly. You can put a want to buy in the parts board but you have to pay 25 bucks

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

I think I'll keep my 25 in my pocket, especially not knowing how much someone is going to charge for it. I'll just wait a few days and see what Fred says but I have a feeling it being rare and in good shape it's not going to be cheap. I really don't mind a repo.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

I doubt very much that these mirrors are rare. Yes, for this generation of trucks, they were only used in 1972. However, I'll almost wager my truck that they were used in many 1970s GM cars and maybe the 70s and 80s trucks and vans. Check out a salvage yard that has older GM vehicles.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

71sierragrande, Fred answered me and to my surprise he said if he had a good one he would charge around 20 bucks. I hope that wasn't a mistake. He said he has me in mind and he'll be on the lookout. I can tell just by his emails that he is good people. What a break. Even if a mirror doesn't come around I know where to go for original parts.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

I'm not sure if there is a junk yard around my area with older vehicles but if there is how would you know if the mirror they have belongs to a 72? Does a 72 mirror have special markings on it?

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

I could call around and see if I can find a junk yard that has older cars and trucks and just bring the pictures that dfwright sent me and just match it up, that's if they will let me in the yard to do that.

To tell you the truth, it's easier to just sit on my fat ass and have someone else find one...lololol........but I might give it a shot.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

The rarity will come in finding one where the mirror itself isn't clouded up or tarnished. If you find an original with a good, clean mirror, by all means, jump on it.

On the other hand, if you find an original with a poor or even just "OK" mirror surface, you'll have to consider also the cost of having the mirror glass replaced.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

dfwright, you are absolutely right. What are the odds of me finding a 45 year old original mirror in very good condition with a good clean mirror surface? With my luck the odds are 0 to none. I think I'll just go with the repo, it's brand new, it looks very much like the original and that's good enough for me.
bill3rail, thanks for the web site but i'm going with the repo.

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

35boulder, I just checked out the mirror lady and she has a good used original mirror from the 70's. It looks exactly like the one dfwright sent me pics of and cheaper than the repo I was looking at. I didn't think it would be worth looking her up but I'm glad I did. I think I found myself an original...thanks to you. I thank you very much sir, George

Was the original mirror in a 72 Chevy C10 stainless only?

Re: 1972 Chevy C10 pickup rear view mirror

Hi dfwright, I checked out the site that 35boulder sent me of the mirror lady. She has a good used original 70's mirror and it's identical to the mirror you sent me with all the same markings. The only thing I'm a little confused about was the 72 chevy truck repo I was looking at is stainless. Now I'm wondering if they were black, stainless or if they had both back then. For some reason I sure would like to know.

The windshield mounted mirror in 72 looks like that shown in post #13. Black metal rear (not plastic) and a black vinyl/rubber surround (not gray). Don't trust an aftermarket parts catalog.
