Re: To buy or not to buy
Check the frame behind the cab to see if it has been cut. There is a chassis number on drivers side of chassis by PS pump. That number should match the number on drivers door post and SPID.
If it is what you want, it is worth what you are willing to pay for it. I am betting that people are NOT busting his door down to buy at the asking price.

You are correct about that. I have been keeping an eye on it for over six months now. When I finally called the gentleman he made the mistake of saying he had an offer of $25,000 and then he said "but that was a year ago." Not quite sure how to take that. I think 25 would be my max with no SPID tag. Tha VIN number shows it to be a V-8 truck built in Baltimore in 1969 Posted via Mobile Device |

Then the "riveted on" rear cab mount gets moved back and bolted on. This is an easy way to spot a lwb to swb conversion. The other way is when they leave the center stake pocket in the bed after they shorten the sheetmetal bed sides. (new swb besides prevents this or a different bed, or even using an original swb frame to help hide the swap) But the SPID would tell the truth,... unless its been reproduced also.

That truck has been for sale for a long, long time. I think I recall seeing it for sale around the time Mecum auction came around in 2016. No SPID is a deal breaker for me or at least $8-10k off asking price.

Re: To buy or not to buy
No SPID, but what about a build sheet? Numbers matching means nothing if neither available. Doesn't mean much even if they are. Ha. (But I like em.. numbers). Real question is whether numbers matter to you. If no, he's asking a numbers matching price for a nicely put together hodgepodge of truck parts. Definitely check the frame for chops carefully as mentioned above. If you like it a its worth the agreed price to you, enjoy and don't look back! Looks like a very nice truck to me.

A vehicle is worth what one person will pay another. I sold a very nice 1970 about 10 years ago for a little over 20k.

Re: To buy or not to buy
You will always have guys that say the price is too high even if the truck was priced at $12000! If the truck is sound, runs good, looks good and you love it you will not get it cheap! I built my 72 4x4 shortbed myself using only the best goodies and I have around $30000 in it. If its built on the cheap side you probably would not want it. I'm not badmouthing anybody but it just depends on what YOU think the truck is worth. The seller would be stupid to sell a great truck for cheap no matter what anybody here thinks even if it does not sell fast.

Re: To buy or not to buy
GrumpyoldMan in sac i know a guy that use great parts and do it for around that price the key is the truck condition I know of 2 trucks short beds 1967-1972 for 2500 each and all of them have almost no cancer. I know of a 1970 that I am debating on buying looks amazing in the pictures but he is in the sticks long ways to drive but i will go next week on Monday to meet him the pictures if it is real show a truck that has original interior that is in mint condition and mint outer paint job original this 1 was garaged. if you buy a rust bucket and want that restored yeah lots of money. I am not giving the locations of these trucks as i am looking at buying 3 of them possibly. Not saying that they do everything i am saying you have to do some work too.
P.S. if you live on the west coast Nevada has 12 c10s 6 short and 6 long beds when i was there a few months ago i saw a bunch of them for sale. |

Re: To buy or not to buy
Very nice but be certain you can live with an all orange truck than glows in the dark.

Re: To buy or not to buy
In my local market (Bay Area, CA) that truck is closer to $15k.
And $30k would get you a beautiful truck with lots of upgrades and some sort of healthy LSx setup. |

Re: To buy or not to buy
In my world 30k means the undercarriage looks as clean as the engine compartment. The seat belts would be new along with the seat issues previously mentioned. It would also have a bunch of before and after photos. There are lots of hack jobs out there that show well. Now if this was a survivor truck in this condition with documents to prove it then thats a different story.
The fact it has been on the market so long doesn't bode well as it has been passed on by more than one person. If you're up for paying that kind of money my advice is wait for the one you want and not one that's close to what you want.

Re: To buy or not to buy
Why is it that all the restored highly optioned trucks never had a SPID-because theay are not highly optioned trucks.

Re: To buy or not to buy
Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to look at it again today fully and drive it. (Had to be at a rig yesterday) I did see build pics for a minute but I didn't get to look at them or the truck very well. Has bondo and a little cancer on passenger fender and passenger rocker looks good but has no magnetism. Other than that and some minor paint/trim flaws it is a solid truck. Engine fires right up and sounds wonderful and ac blows cold. He's got a sweet 55 hardtop sitting right next to it that I would love to have as well.
Again thanks for the advice and I will keep you all updated. |

Re: To buy or not to buy
Sorry but for anything over 20k this truck should not have a flaw plain and simple. If it has cancer that you can see how much more do you not see just my opinion and no it is not my money but I would look at the build sheet and look at every crack and crevice in this truck bring a creeper and or card board. The seats look like garbage, the carpets make sure they are good, look really well under the truck for rust. If he really put this money into it the chassis should be beautiful. Most guys now days if they are taking everything off the truck and rebuilding it they have the frame blasted and powder coated because it is 100% more durable then paint. A lot of guys will also use some kind of stray on the under carriage to prevent future rust. I plan on my trucks having the chassis fully powder coated.

Re: To buy or not to buy
For 30k it should have perfect metal and body work. Any rust should have been cut out and new welded in with only a skim coat of filler as needed to block out straight.
I just looked thru old car price guide last week, and for that kind of money this should be a frame off restored driver. Looks like a great truck for the right money, like 15-20

Re: To buy or not to buy
Well I must've pissed the guy off by finding all the things wrong with the truck because I can't get him to answer or call me back to look at it again. Now I know why it's been for sale for so long, someone's fishing for a sucker. Oh well I guess.
Thanks to all of you for the opinions and advice, I really appreciate it. |

Re: To buy or not to buy
Glad you took some of the above advice!
You cannot tell if the numbers are matching if there are none to compare (SPID)! Keep looking for a truck because that one is probably not worth looking at. Seller may very well find a sucker and dump it on him. Bill Around here we will gladly spend someone else's money however in this case we hopefully saved you some.
