Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

Thanks! Hadn't even thought to recoup the cost of the plates. Yup that cost me about 120 on the purchase of those plates if I remember right. And it'll cost me again to replace them!

I have found a couple of Classic ride friendly restoration and repair shops that have their own fabrication, metal, body and paint shops in house and do full restoration jobs as well as less than full jobs like what I have. Appreciate the quick advice and well wishes.

I don't think I'm going to even give the Geico guys a chance because they're going to treat my truck like it's a 50 year old farm vehicle worthy of Service King's bondo and deluxe spray service, which isn't going to cut it.

I'll be hitting one of these nearby shops soon and we'll see how they approach my damage!

Sorry to hear this! Hope all is good with you.
How the F^(k did she NOT see that bright orange in front of her?

I had a lady back into the center side of a van and she stated I did not see you. She would not have seen anything but a gray wall if she had looked!

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

Took it to a place called Robinson Restoration Services in Denton, TX today. The guy there noticed a couple things I didn't ( the tailgate is basically a repop or a re-skin and many of the welds have been broken as a result of the collision, needs to be replaced.

Worse of all is the bed made contact with the driver cab corner pretty much making a mess of it.

I've now noticed that the bed is not level any longer. It slopes to the rear and the cab body lines no longer match up with the bed.

Surprise surprise surprise!

There’s a good one in Oklahoma that restores and sell classic vehicles. It would definitely be worth the drive to someone like that.
Contact knippelmier classic Chevrolet , I believe they are either in Oklahoma City or Chickasha Oklahoma.

Don't forget to add in LABOR, not just the parts replacement!

Many shops are at $95/hour shop rate. You can charge that as well, even if you do the work yourself, but you may have to accept flat rate hours.

And paint and paint labor! Just the paint there will be $1000.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

I have received the estimate from the first place I took it.

First: The shop assumes because the truck has a C-notch that it was damaged and will need 5 hours @95/hr of frame repair and welding. They did not examine the frame on the lift and the guy that wrote the estimate was not the guy who looked at the truck. So, to me that is suspect. But, I haven't looked at the C-notch myself so they may be absolutely right about this, especially given that the bed made contact with the cab and it is a bolt-in notch.

Second: This shop has "Agreed Hagerty Repair Labor Rates" as follows:
75.00/hr for Body/Sheet metal and Refinish work ( paint prep/finish work )
95.00/hr Frame work
40.00/hr per paint hour: Paint&Material

The hours for the estimate were broken down as follows @75/hr unless otherwise noted ( $4192 ):

20 Refinish $1500
11 R&R tailgate moving handle to rear and smooth previous handle location $825
6 color sand/buff finish $450
5 frame repair @95/hr $475
3.5 cab repair $262.5
3.5 R&R rear bumper 262.5
3 R&R exterior trim $225
2 paint/tint color match @40/hr $80
1.5 bed repair @cab impact area $112.5

Parts:

250 tailgate assy
520 rear bumper w/brackets -- Holy Moly Batman, is it gold plated?
800 paint materials

Total is ~5800 and change.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

You are not required to take just any estimate, especially made by the company of the person causing the accident (as in, "within their repair system"). You can go to the body shop of your choice for an estimate. If the insured's company balks, just go to your state's insurance commissioner with any estimate they give that low-balls the estimate you got from the body shop of your choice. That practice is illegal. BTDT.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

OK... Long story short...

I have not filed the claim with Hagerty yet as I wanted another estimate from another shop. Unfortunately that effort has been slow because other shops have refused to work on it because of the "frame damage" and because of crappy weather ( I don't drive the truck in the rain/wet ).

Today Hagerty threatened to close the claim. I told them of my troubles with obtaining another shops estimate and Hagerty said they would be sending out an Appraiser to produce a report to get the claim moving.

Hagerty is now playing Hard Ball with me because my assigned "agent" or whatever has decided she needs to get this claim off her desk!

Truck is gonna get dirty while they work on it, so you might as well get it wet to get things moving along. It sounds like you're in "insurance hell" which is not a fun place to be. Good luck!

So I get a phone call/voice mail from unknown guy just says Hagerty and says he wants to know where the 67 truck is typically located through the work week.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

If they are starting to play hard ball with you, your random phone call was probably them wanting to make sure you are not driving the truck to and from work, and that it is garaged, ect. which is usually a requirement on most classic insurance company policies. Even though that would have absolutely nothing to do with your collision, they could use something as stupid as having your truck parked outside of the garage, or driving it to work, to basically say you have violated your contract agreement, and not cover costs.

I'd also avoid exchanging information over the phone as much as possible, since there is no trail of evidence to follow. Communicate through written, or digital correspondence as much as possible, just so you have all the ammunition you need if you have to fight them over the situation. Sucks it has to be this way, but sounds like you might have a long road ahead of you, best of luck with it all.

I think you better get this going fast. $6000 is better than nothing. If they cancel you won't get anything and loose your insurance. Do the work yourself and have a couple g's on top and keep your insurance.

I really don't see how they can deny the claim at this point. It's a no-fault claim. I have not done any fraud at all and my policy is solid in terms of factual details and requirements being followed.

They are just trying to close this claim by the end of the year. I understand the motivation, I just don't appreciate the strong arm methods being used and the threats being leveled against me, the customer.

We shall see I guess. Who woulda thought Hagerty would start a pissin match..

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

So if this had happened on Dec 30 would they be pressuring you to wrap it up by the next day? Is there some clause in the policy with a time limit to settle the claim that you have exceeded? Most jurisdictions have an insurance commissioner or somebody like that where you can lodge a complaint if you feel unfairly treated. Such a complaint often changes the insurance companies communications to a tail between the legs tone. First and foremost make sure you know what your policy says.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

I was under the impression the standard amount of time was 12 months. Guess I better start reading the fine print.

Here's the latest verbiage from my Hagerty "friend"...

"...but you do have a contractual obligation to cooperate with our investigation for coverage to be applicable and this appraisal report is part of that investigation."

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

They were throwing me into the Appraisal Process which by definition is when the Insurance Provider and the Insured have a disagreement on the amount of the loss. Both parties then hire an appraiser and there's a third party involved. The final verdict on the loss is final! What they told me was the opposite of this, that adjusting the amount would be piece of cake!

They were being shady on this. I called them out on it and they shifted me to another internal Adjuster. Even more Hard Ball! This guy went and contacted the shop that I went to on my own, requested from them the estimate that I commissioned without Hagerty even being involved. They gave it to Hagerty and now Hagerty is closing the claim based on that estimate.

They took me out of the loop completely all the while I was telling them that was NOT WHAT I WANTED TO DO. That I was in the process of obtaining another shop to have a look to give me some comparison/contrast so that I could make an informed decision.

I think you misunderstood the posts you quoted. That was early on when I was simply establishing the claim at both insurance companies so they were aware of each other.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

I have been through the same thing a few years back but it was not with classic car insurance , I was also rear ended by a dodge 3500 that sent me across the lane head on in to a brand new chevy cruze , needless to say my truck was totaled and the chevy , the drivers insurance was playing hardball on the amount of my truck value , I told them numorus times that I will not agree to ths amount they wanted to give me, this went on for 3 months then all comunication stopped then one day a check showed up in the mail with the amount I wanted . I will say I feel I had a advantage point on the insurance company because they had to rent me a car while my claim was being settled , I think they relized after almost 4 months of rental fees they were losing money and settled my claim. So if one of insurance Co has to offer you a rental I would get on it ASAP this might give you the advantage you need .

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

I think you're making this a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Let the Hagerty adjuster review the truck. They are not trying to screw you.

I have a friend that had the exact situation you have, his squarebody was forced into a curb by a car coming into his lane. Long story short the other driver's insurance wanted to pay something like $1,200. Hagerty looked at the truck, understood the parts values (air ride was damaged) and he was given a check for +/-$2500 with the stipulation that if more damage was found it would be covered. It turns out the frame was damaged and needed to be straightened a bit. An additional claim was filed and they paid for that too.

You're looking at this the wrong way, most people usually complain they can't get an adjuster out to look at their vehicle fast enough, and you're trying to duck from one Just set up a time you can be there to meet with them.

Once Hagerty gets your truck taken care of, they do the legwork to get their money back from the yahoo that hit you.

Re: Got hit from behind today in the truck :(

...Maybe... but the policy states the Appraisal Process is a one-and-done deal. Once the decision is reached on the amount of loss, it is final. That is in the Contract.

Whether they are trying to screw me or not, the possibility of me getting screwed is there and I would be legally bound to the letter of the Contract. Also, keep in mind, the Appraisal Process brings with it the real possibility of an immediate and non-reversible Total-loss of the vehicle if the Appraiser so chooses. I know others have had this happen to them and it is not good at all.

What they have done instead is far better. They have closed the claim. I'll receive a check in the amount of the one and only shop estimate I was able to get. Whether that's enough to repair the truck or not, I have no idea because they did not allow me to continue to find and solicit another shop to get comparison data ( I did find two other shops but both refused due to "Frame Damage" ).

So right now I'm feeling like I already got screwed.

At this point you need to take your truck to the shop that gave you the estimate and let them do the repairs. if they have anything else they find they will contact Hagerty and work it out with them. all you want is your truck repaired correctly, you are not tring to make Money off the deal. that is the way body shops and insurance work, they work together. i have a freind with a body shop that has worked with Hagerty and said it was the easiest claim he had done.
