I don't know why you all bother with a resevior on these old trucks. They don't have a 2 way pressure valve in the radiator cap like the new ones do (or none at all). If your truck is spewing fluid, then the truck is either overheating and causing too much pressure, or you need to buy a new radiator cap to pressurize the cooling system correctly.

You can get the fancy aluminum or stainless overflow tanks on e-bay. Here is one with a buy it now for $22.

I put one in my 71 and out of an old s-10 pickup sitting in the trees. All it does is catch the overflow. It will not suck it back up because i do not have a closed system. You have to get certain types of caps for your radiator and your overflow tank. The overflow tank should not vent until it gets full and reallly hot!! This way it will hold pressure build up and when the engine is off that built up pressure will push the fluid back into the radiator.

Actually the tank can be vented and it'll still work properly. The vacume created by the contracting cooling in the rad is what sucks it back in.

Does your radiator suck the fluid back in from the resevoir? I have that same vent radiator cap and am going to get a washer resevoir this next weekend and am curious if it will work. Thanks!!! Shawn

Cold to hot / Hot to Cold
If you get a 15lbs. cap and hook up a overflow tank it will work, it don't matter what kind of tank or cap it has on it as long as the hose from the radiator is under the level of coolant in the jug. That's why I choose a tank out of the 80's model monty carlo, the hose connects in the bottom of the jug and it stays under the fluid level. If you have a jug that the hose runs through the top it has to stay covered up with coolant at all times for the suction to work.

I would put it either level or below the cap on the radiator. If you look at the picture I posted earlier in this thread you will see that the hose is below the cap. I would at the least have it level. I know that the jug is dirty, but it's my driver I can't have it clean everytime I need a picture of something.

my reservoir was cracked so i took it off when i first got it...ive always drove without it on yeah it spits on the ground but i just put more water in it every now and then. ive drove the truck atleast 250 miles one way to mexico in the summer and it never got hot on me....also drove it about 200-250 miles up north in the winter time ....that was before i had the turbo400 in it...i had a little 307/3speed on the floor standard...then i switched to 350/t400 dont know if i could go that far again my radiator is only a 2 core but its brand new and so is my water pump, what do you guys think? will my truck get hot with the 350/th400 setup faster opposed to the 307/3spd? thanks

Yes, it will warm up quicker. All automatics run hotter than standards, because of the cooler lines going to the radiator and the hot transmission fluid flowing through it.
