Re: Road hats
-
I live on a paved road that goes to the North side of a recreational lake. My thing is gloves & sunglasses. I haven't bought a pair of sunglasses for years, and have found a few pairs of gloves along the road. I also found a Snap-on 18" breaker bar, pair of fencing pliers, and a pair of heavy duty cable cutters. I always pick that stuff up..... LockDoc

Re: Road hats
My wife and I stopped in Reno years ago. When I got on the hwy in the morning I noticed a black bag sitting just off the side of the road. Inside was a brand new laptop in the original unopened box. Plus numerous dvd movies. No information at all about the owner. It provided years of great service.

Re: Road hats
How about road chainsaws? I nabbed two!
I was doing a job along the Potomac River. On the road down to the river was a farm that had a pole barn builder's sign out front I'd see while passing. One day near the end of my job, on my way out, there lay two chainsaws at the entrance of the lane. It was real obvious to me that the contractor had forgotten the tailgate was down with the saws still sitting on it. I also noticed the sign was gone, so they must be done the job. With no way to contact the owner of the saws, I picked them up and pulled up to the farm house and knocked on the door. No one came to the door. I hollered some and poked around a bit, but not too much. I hate buckshot! No one stirring about, so I tucked them in against the wall just inside the door and left. If the contractor left the customer unsatisfied with his work he may still have lost two chain saws. But I'd like to think he got them back. Looked like a nice job done to me.

Picked up this gem coming home from work today (pictured as found). I would have never stopped to pick it up if it weren't for this thread!

Re: Road hats
Some of you guys are finding better hats than mine. I better keep a lookout. dave6672, that is a keeper, as good as HO455's GMC hat. Thanks to outfield for giving them the proper treatment before they find their way to a new head.

Re: Road hats
I have found a hat or two over the years but I always stop for tools in the road or alongside the road, I saw a complete tool box along the highway and stopped and picked it up, had to pick up the scattered sockets but was worth it, I found a Leatherman once, tow chains, hammers, the best find was a milwaukee hammer drill with concrete bits in the original bag, this was on a freeway on ramp

Re: Road hats
I think I've found half dozen Igloo coolers in my time.
Back when I was running a new construction aluminum siding business me and my cutter went out to get lunch on his Harley. On our way back to the job, along side of the road just past the intersection with a light, lay two full boxes of siding. That's 3sq/400 sq', unough to cover a 10' x 10' shed or 10' high x 40' wall. We went back to the job, grabbed the truck, and swooped it up. It was about $300 worth of siding, not even kinked. I figure this was the big outfit that was my competition. They had a guy driving a long C30 stake body that kept the crews stocked. He must have hit it hard coming out of the light so fast those boxes slid clear of the truck and landed flat. We'd always see him pounding down the road in a rush all over the place. That stuff loved to slide out of a truck. I never lost any using a ratchet strap.

Haha. I have exactly the same hat. But I paid something like fifteen bucks for it. Good score.

Re: Road hats
How about a road turtle? I saw this bad boy was crossing my road this afternoon as I was heading home from work. There's a pond on both sides of the road so I guess he was heading from one to the other.

I was headed home on I-35 south out of Fort Worth and saw a UPS visor in the road. Wasn't about to stop and get it though. People drive crazy here!

Re: Road hats
My latest find. This is a good one. It says Warriors Heart on it. It was pretty clean but I put it through the washer anyway and it came out excellent. Warriors Heart is a treatment center in Bandera County TX for military, veterans, and first responders.

Re: Road hats
Best time to find hats is during bike week in Laconia ,NH . People come and buy hats and get on the bike to ride . 1/2mile or so the hats on the road . No pictures but I have them dating back to the early 90s .
Best area to find them is the road leading out Wiers Beach . Bike week starts next Saturday.

Re: Road hats
Saw this one yesterday while out for a bike ride. It was laying on Route 42, many miles from Route 66. Scored a nice fan belt too (for the garbage can, along with the hat).

Re: Road hats
I run and walk a lot along on the roads around here. One thing I have started picking up and saving is lead tire weights. The ones that clip onto to the edge of the rims. These are getting hard to find new and are already banned around here. I am going to stock pile a pound or two for my projects.
Last week I found an iphone 11 in the road by the curb. The case was battered but the phone was in good shape and the screen was not even cracked. It was about a half a block from the pot store. I bet some loser put the phone on the roof of the car to smoke out and get high, then drove away high with the phone sitting on the roof. Once he got up to 40 mph or so it fell off. I dropped it off at the Verizon store, let them deal with this loser. I hope this idiot doesn't have a baby he can leave on the roof in a car seat..........
