Re: Replacing oil pan gasket
Pull the rear main cap, slide in the new main seal halves with a dab of sealant where they meet. Stagger the halves a 1/4" in from the main cap plane.
Don't forget the dab of sealant on the rear main cap to block surface you should be good to go. geezer will correct me if I'm wrong |

Re: Replacing oil pan gasket
Oil pan and rear seal came out today. Everything is cleaned up and ready for reassembly. What kind of grease should I put on the crank before I put the rear main seal cap back on?

And YES. Dabs of RTV on the corners of the end gaskets.

Re: Replacing oil pan gasket
Well, the rear main seal and oil pan gasket were replaced. Ran the truck for a week and had no leaks. Truck has been sitting for a week and now it's leaking again. I followed all directions and double checked all my steps. Installed the better Fel Pro rear seal. I'm extremely frustrated... almost to the point of selling the truck. I'm no certified mechanic but I can fix pretty much anything with directions and advice. I don't have a lift or cherry picker so I do it the old fashioned way, on my back. But right now I don't even want to think about attempting this again.... uuuugh. Time to take it to someone who can fix it right.

Re: Replacing oil pan gasket
I personally don't use oil pan gaskets because they're easy to get too tight and squish out. I just use Permatex "the right stuff"

Re: Replacing oil pan gasket
I've recently been told that there are neoprene rear main seals that seal much better than the silicone one. I can only find them for a 235 motor though. Anyone know where to get one for a 250 motor?

Re: Replacing oil pan gasket
Can’t help with the seal but have you heard of using a dye for finding the leak source.
