Re: Fuel pump PITA

I just ordered the TSP JM1003BK pump. It seems to have good reviews from many places. Will report back after I get it installed.

Then I get to fight with the store that sold me the previous new pump since it definitely is not correct for my application even though their systems said it would be.

The other two options appear to be:

1. Edelbrock 1721, made to work with Edelbrock carbs that don't like anything more than 6 psi.
2. Carter M6900, some say rated at 6 psi, some say rated at 7 psi. Mixed reviews on them with some saying they USED to put out 6 psi but recent versions do 9-10 psi and even Carter has acknowledged the problem.
I am running an Edelbrock AVS2. I only have about 100 miles on the fuel pump but no problems so far. Good luck.

Edelbrock carbs and QJs like the same lower psi. Good to know.

Re: Fuel pump PITA

Get a Carter M6900 went through the same thing with a Carter 6624. Too much pressure overloading the carb and constant fuel smell even with a regulator. Put a m6900 and life is good again.

Re: Fuel pump PITA

Summit is fast, new pump should be here tomorrow. Weather just turned to crap so it will likely be the weekend before I can get the new pump put on.

Can you clarify what fuel pump you had problems with? It looks like from your post you had the M6900 and replaced it with another M6900.

Truck came with a carter m6624 installed with one of the cheap inline fuel regulators and a edelbrock 1405 600cfm carb. The truck would not want to shut off after turning off the key, smelled like gas even when the truck was off. Tried to do new fuel line with a better regulator but still was having issues.

Removed the m6624 for a M6900 without a regulator and the truck runs better with no gas smells or wanting to stay running even after turning off the key.

It was so bad you could shut off the truck, walk by it the next day and just smell gas. I think it was pumping too much psi and could not get it right. I did also pull the edelbrock after confirming the fuel pump seemed better for a 600 cfm holley I had. With the pump and carb its been running better.

** Also edited my previous post to make it clear **

Re: Fuel pump PITA

Winter storm delayed the arrival of my new pump. Not a big deal since I won't be able put the new pump on until the weekend anyway.

Re: Fuel pump PITA

Got the new (2nd) pump installed today. Have to wait overnight for the RTV to cure but the install went okay. Had to chase down some fittings for the pump but that was pretty straightforward. The parts store had what I needed which was a surprise.

I moved the truck from storage to the house to work on it driving on the 1st pump of course. I turned the regulator to 2.5 psi. It started and ran just fine. When I shut it down it didn't flood out like before but did seep at the air horn gasket just a bit so was still getting too much fuel after shut down.

I swapped out the pump as I mentioned and I left the regulator on the system as a safety precaution. We'll see tomorrow how it runs with the new pump.

Re: Fuel pump PITA

If it floods after it's off. Your needle and seat may have something in it

Re: Fuel pump PITA

I just rebuilt the carb which included a new fuel filter. I don't think that's the case. We will see how it does with the new pump. But the regulator can't regulate the upstream pressure once the engine is off. Once off, the pressure equalizes on both sides of the regulator so if pump pressure is 9-10 psi, it will most certainly flood the carb when off because that is more pressure than the needle valve can stop.

Also, O'Reilly did refund me for the 1st pump. They said, "we don't usually do that since it has been installed, but we'll do it this time" was their only comment. Well, yeah, since you have it listed as appropriate for my particular vehicle which is patently false.

Re: Fuel pump PITA

Well it started up easy and idled fine. No leaks. I took it on a gentle drive at first, no issues. Then, after it was warmed up and I was on my way back home I pushed it a little and also tried the passing gear kickdown and everything worked great. Never starved for fuel and never flooded out. When I shut it down there was a tiny bit of wetness on the main venturis but nothing dripping. I have the regulator set at 2. No smell of gas around the truck any more.

Going to drive it on a little longer trip here in a bit, hope it stays running well.
