I'd like to see someone fix the wheel well openings on a new bed. I think it would look really nice if you did that. Otherwise the old beds rock!

We're starting to lean heavy towards going back to stock. I
walked around in the rain yesterday contemplating my situation. Brother-in-law sez stay with stock also. A couple of years ago when I was working on stock bed my painter neighbor started talking me into late model bed. I checkd a couple of junk yards around here and they ran anywheres from 800 - 1000 bucks. That pretty much had me leaning towards stock. Then when my son totaled his truck we put his bed on mine and I've had a lot of people tell me that they like it better with the new style bed. The way its looking now is I might have to put stock bed back on. Might try and sell the new bed and see what happens I really don't want to try and make wheel wells match, adjust lines etc. Thanks for all the input. Just what I needed. When I finally decide and get it put back together I'll post new pics. Don

Fixing the spare cutout isn't that hard, but it took me 2 fenders to do it. Or at least parts of 2.

Just buy a new fender, 300 plus shipping from LMC brand new. There's no bondo or welds here, not to mention the time involved in patching it:

Well I finally decided, looks like stock bed going back on. I was
cleaning shop last weekend and found stainless strips, lights, etc. I had ordered from LMC a couple years ago. Do I procrastinate or what? Actually I got laid off from IBM right after I ordered stuff then job hunted for about 4 months, ended up working for State. Love all the holidays, pay aint that great but I can live off it. Just have to curb my spending and save up longer for my toys. When I finish bed will post new pics. Thanks for all the input. L8ter Don

stay stock
Use the original bed ! It's very difficult to find GOOD drivers side fenders without the cutout though. You can maybe find a rusty or partially trashed fender & cutout the upper corner CAREFULLY. Then cutout the spare tire fender corner EXACTLY as the patch part. Mig the 2 together to make a fender of your liking. I did that once & used a fiberglass template for marking the 2 fenders first. That way the cutout parts are exactly the same.

Definitely the late model bed if you plan on keeping it.If you sell it then go with the original as you can see some guys actually like that look.
The late model bed has a nicer usuable tailgate, plus you can get a fibreglass tonneau cover and box liner cheaper. |
