That Caddy is sweet. I would proably be all over that deal......and of course you HAVE to put in a thumping system, although it looks like you have it in the works already

I say try and sell the '72 and keep the '70. Then take the Caddy.

I know that you are free to choose as you wish, but I think that the Caddy wouldn't be a good daily driver for a starting driver such as yourself. No offense intended, but I think the truck would be better. I think the truck would also carry lower insurance than the Caddy, just because of make.
I know the truck needs work, but sell the '72 to finance it. Since it sounds like you want a thundering system, and you can't have one in the Caddy, then put it in the truck. You don't want to compromise what you want in a car unless you absolutely have to. Fix up the truck, daily drive it, and keep the Caddy for a Sunday cruiser or special occasions, like homecoming dances and Prom. Keep it 100% original, then someday you can give it to your grandchildren.

just my 2 cents

Keep the plate BOOTSY!!!! Do I have to repete myself?
Also, I see that you have a real life Delco am/fm/8track! That is sport'n dude! Go to the swapmeet and get some old Motown and lower the back of that Caddy and cruisezzzzzzzzzzzz. I might add that you will also need dash protection. I suggest a really fuzzy rug and then a set of dice hanging from the rear view mirror.. Way cool Dinnut!

Well dinnut, I say play the sympathy angle. They evidently know you want/need the Caddy, and trust that you will take care of their 'baby'. So here's the angle, you need to convince them that you have to keep one truck to haul "stuff" with. "For heaven's sake grandma, I can't put a load of lumber, sand, or cattle feed in the trunk of the Caddy! You wouldn't want me to tear up 'Bootse' would you? I want to keep it nice! I need my truck to drive to work and haul stuff."

Great deal man!!! the only thing i would warn you about is if that thing hasn't had but 4,000 in 26 years i don't think you need to go rompin' on that big block to hard or might start buring oil faster that you can burn those tires off.... (old lady car+new lead foot driver=engine that burns oil)

To me, it would be a shame to make the Caddy a daily driver, low mile examples just aren't very common and although that particular car isn't high up on the collecter car circuit, just the low miles is enough to make it worth a decent amount. Make a daily driver out of it and the value will plummet, not to mention that it will not be a cheap daily driver-big CI engines werent' built for economy. See if the Grandparents will let you sell the Caddy, buy a good daily driver (modern car or pickup), sell the project vehicles. When you get your education and income to match, then you will have the money to build what you want. When I was looking for my first vehicle and getting all antsy, my dad gave me some good advice. Don't be in a hurry, there will always be another one for sale. That applies here also, there will always be another pickup for sale whether it is 1, 2, or 5 years from now. Good luck with what ever direction you decide to go.

Randy

How close are the two cars SN#'s?
If they are sequential I sure wouldn't want ot break up the pair.

At this point I would leave them in the garage. They are going up in value. You start putting the miles on and they will go down. THe baritz has a following.

As to what to do........26 year old antfieez is a VERY bad thing. I can about guarantee you going to pop the water pump,
I would change al lthe fluids.

Dinnut, you know you're an SOB. Don't be skeert! It's just an old boat anchor Caddy.

Seriously, I've had one of those (a 77). Expensive to maintain (try to find parts - 4 wheel disks, FWD V8) and having sat for that long it'll require a complete once-over to make it as reliable as it may look. Keep the truck.

I agree with CPNE, you will have to do a lot of work to make that car road worthy again. Also, you don't want to put the system in it, yet the system is what you want in your car. Plus, we all know how kids are with their cars, and if you drive that to high school, other kids are apt to be even less careful about denting it or kicking it, or flinging cigarette butts on it. Some people also have vendettas against those with nice vehicles. Thats why I say keep the truck, it will be better in the long run. But get the Caddy, and keep it as your long term resto project.

Go for the Caddy. Your grandparents will be thrilled. And so will you once you start driving it. There are lots of trucks to buy. Not too many Caddy's that cool.

1969 gmc... i hardly see this car a long time resto project....... it wont need that much to be roadworthy. not more than my truck would. and ill have ALL the nice conviences like a/c tilt pw, pl, am/fm/original 8-track eletric opening/closing trunk, self leveling rear air suspension.

i may end up keeping one of the trucks. my paretns and i were discussing it and we think we need a truck around the house. so im thinking of keeping the 72, getting it running, throwing the edelbrock performer rpm intake and holley 600 cfm carb i have in my garage and an hei setup on there and a timing chain and see how it runs then. right now it has a 2bbl andpoints. the timing chain has slipped to the point of it not running nemore.

also i think im going to try to attack the timing chain by myself. ill start another thread about that though.

i hope i can get like 3500 out of my 70, maybe even throw in the swb frame too if they want it... the 72 is very rusty though, so im thinkign of buying a front clip i see on the parts board, trying to find another cab, and a drivers door, and then a tailgate and front bed panel and ill be set! sounds like alot but this will be over a long time. i could just "patch" the cab temporarily also.... i dont know. im thinking im going to need the moeny from the 70 to give my grandparents.

i guess we will see how this all turns out once my mind is made up

ok your probably not going to like what im about to say but listen anyways. this seems like a great deal and but its not that great in the end as soon as you start driving that caddy its gonna need everything and i mean everything. will need all new brake hydraulics lines and everything im talking calipers hoses master cylinder and even possibly a booster. you have to remember rubber rots when it sits and brake fluid becomes highly corrosive when it sits for that long. also that motor will begin the leak everything oil antifreeze from everywhere. as was stated the cooling system is going to need one hell of a flush job not to mention a new water pump and probably a new radiator because antifreeze will gum out after a long period of time and clog the cores of the radiator. the transmission is probably going to start slipping because of the 25 year old rubbers inside being dry and cracked. not to mention parts for caddys aint cheap and they arent exactly easy to get a hold of most of the time. yea everything probably looks great on the car but looks are very decieving its not what you can see that you gotta worry about its all the cracked and dry rubber you cant see. sorry for the long post but as much as you have posted about your truck and trying to get it in good running order i say stick with it. stop posting so much here and start swapping stuff on the trucks. i bet outta those two trucks you can make a pretty good driver and i think in the long run you will be happier

When was the last time the Caddy was driven? I'd be afraid to even start the engine without priming the oil pump real good first. Why did your g-parents buy them and not drive them?

yea you will doubt what i said untill your brake fluid is sitting on the highway and you cant stop im not trying to be ignorant but your going to have so much money in this car why not just fix the truck. i have been around this my whole life and seen people do exactly what your doing and have it turn into a giant money pit

because. i kind of need a car. once i started to think about i am going to be one of the only people in my group of friends with a car (that were not scared to be in). i need to be able to take my friends places with me and such. and air conditiong. i dont know if youve ever been in 120 degree heat, but itll cook you real fast, and if im going on a date or somewhere i dont want to have to arrive sweaty as hell and make my girl go in a truck thats hot as hell. and the summer is when im going to be driving, so i cant really see myself driving a non-airconditioned vehicle in the summer. and this car is already in garage and i can get a good deal on it. so we will give the car a complete inspection of all lines, brakes, i will change the coolant, oil, tranny fluid would probably be a good idea. we will just have to see what it needs once we start checkign the whole car. i will also have the transmission and such professionally inspected.
