Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
I've converted several from R-12 to R-134. All
I do is pull a good vacuum to get all out that I can then put new oil and R-134 back in. I don't have any way to add freon with out the gauges hooked up. Hopefully I'll be able spend some time on it in the next day or two.

I have one of those thingys that you just screw on the cans and pull the trigger and it punctures the can and injects it, will that work for you?

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Here is one that I have on the shelf at the store.
Here is one that I can order. Real similar to the other one, but it has a gauge on top. |

Lots of rotosynchreverters get worked on. I mean lots.
(Rotosynchreverter is the loose nut situated halfway between the steering wheel and the back of the front seat) So, any closer to cold air blowing out of those vents? |

I was a pain. I found a cheapie R134 line with a gauge in the garage. I used it and it took the freon great. I realized I didn't have enough oil when my compressor started knocking and growling so I went and got more oil, then I had a leaky valve core in my low side adapter that I had to replace so I had to run get more R134. I test drove it and it seems to be blowing nice and cool, although it was about dusk. I'll see how it cools tomorrow during the day.

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Joe,
How did you find the leak in the evap? Just pressure it up and listen for a leak? My burb leaks like a mother and at $7 a can I can't just keep dumping it in there. It has the rear air too and it takes a bunch to charge it. I tried the red dyed freon and it didn't work. I have heard of sniffers but don't know anyone that has one. BTW, congrats on the cold air! Can I get my kid's truck on the waiting list? |

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Mike,
I hooked up a vacuum pump to suck it down. The low side gauge has a vacuum scale built in. I let the pump run for awhile and it wasn't achieving any vacuum, so I started looking for leaks. The leak in the condenser was big enough I could hear it sucking air. I've had good luck with the yellow/green dye/freon. You need a black light for it to stand out, but you can also see it under regular light if you look closely. I'm no expert, but I'm willing to help out with what I do know. I borrow the equipment from a friend that I work with, so I just need a few days notice. One of these days I'm gonna buy my own stuff. Harbor Freight has the gauge set for @$40 and a vacuum pump for $70-80. Just not a priority at the moment....

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
I have a set of gauges if you ever need to use them. I got them, but haven't used them yet. I don't have a pump though. I also carry freon at the store for future reference.
