it took a long time to read but i have went through this entire thread. awesome source for information. i am just in the start of my project. for sure, i have learned who not to deal with. my 68 is my first old truck and i may be a little slow but i can not figure out what a pinch weld is. any help?

i have no desire to lay frame. i can't imagine the thought of losing pressure at speed. it looks cool but "DANGEROUS AS HELL IN MY OPINION". i'll be content if i can bottom out out 3" above the pavement.

The pinch weld that they are referring to is located on the bottom side of the rocker panels where 2 pieces of metal are "pinched" together, and then spot "welded"

I was wondering if anyone that is layin frame on stock trailing arm can post pics or e-mail at fathead_03@hotmail.com I desire to do this, and am just curious as to how they are all designed. Also, how much room behind the front seats is there with a big notch, enough to fit another set of seats??? And up front, with the crossmember notch, could i Z my frame instead, i was thinking 2". Has anyone done this, and if so, what problems did you encounter? I want to use stock steering box(no rack and pinion) and i think the only problem will be ill have to put another joint or 2 in the steering linkage to clear the upper control arm. Thanks. OH, and last, is there anyone in or around washington/oregon that has done the crossmember notch? I would love to take a look, and also maybe even have you notch mine

Well, ive been contimplating this crossmember drop, as well as z-ing my frame. I picked myself up a late 70's early 80's chevy frame with the full front suspension and whatnot. I was wondering, will the crossmember from it bolt up to my frame, so should i just take the whole front suspension off of it, notch that crossmember, then mount it up to my frame? ALso, i wanted to z the frame, and was wondering, as i want to z the frame 2", should i only go 1" on a crossmember drop, or should i go 2 & 2, or what should i do to get a fair amount of drop while not having to put 30 u-joints in my steering shaft. Thanks. Oh, also, anyone here in washington or souther BC wanna do my crossmember notch??? Thanks.

Do a 1.25" crossmember drop then see where you framesits and go from there. I personaly would not z your frame. Cut your Air bags mount as short as you can and cut up the crossmember to clear your bags and your panel will sit down on the ground. What size tire you running on the front? Also where your trailing arms mount to the crossmember on the rear you will need to take out your rivets and the peice of 1/8" plate that is there. If you want to lay true frame.

phantom, ive been reading this post from the begining.I really think that if you sell your parts your truck will never be completed.I think that some off the guys on the site are right,maybe step back,take a breather,and start on it in the new year.I know what its like to be building a new home and not enough time for the truck,as im also doing a couple trucks.I have stepped back for acouple months.Im now back on the site and on this thread first.To be honest and not get to soft on you guys is this thread that got me back in the game.I live for the under construction pics.So phantom dont give up and dont make me come down there and help finish that truck,cause im only an hour or so away.

Please dont waste your time on Turners!! Even though all the parts I got from him bolt up correct and will work great the experience with him has been a nightmare. Not sure if he is even still in bussiness. Air ride makes a set of a arms now for around $700 and a board member here can make you a modded member for around $400. If you decide to use Turner BEWARE!!

Catalog from turners......sh!T. That guy is a crook. His shop consist of walmart tarps and dirt. If you look in Street Trucks Mag you will see his ads and all those pics are taken @ his shop. His shop is a dive. What parts you need let me know. I have bought alot from this guys and can let you know what works and what doesn't.If you did get his number you wouldn't get through. he never answers his phone and his mail box is alway full.

one of my buddies had on of the first issues of "Truck Builder" and they were starting a "Project 67". they were tackling the front and rear suspension first. they had an awesome replacement crossmember, control arms, bags, and shocks set-up. does anyone know who makes this (or if youve seen it)? id like to see if that would work on all 67-87 1/2 ton frames. any info would help.
P.S. i live off those build pics and will be posting some of my own very soon. so keep em coming!!! |

Jim Myers Racing has a mustang 2 crossmember suspension that bolts on these trucks and works very good. We have one on a 67 truck at the shop that is using shockwaves. I do not have them on a website so this web site won't let me post them. If some one can help me with posting them to the web I will gladly post them.

I like the Chevy parts and the MII crossmember wasn't designed to lay the truck on the ground. Its not that they don't work just fine. I just tend to sell people more on the dropped Chev. The MII does provide you with a better turning radius. The control arms aren't as wide. I think the factory one looks better. Maybe I'm just wierd. Its what i'm used to using
