72 Suburban Build
I picked up a 72 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom today. It's in pretty good shape. It's got a 402 Big block, and AC in it. My 72 C10 has been put on the back burner and I'm going to move all of my parts to the Suburban. I have a Porterbuilt front cross-member, tubular air ride arms, and Baer discs. The rear drop member setup should be here in a week or so. Here is a before picture and one with the wheels that are going to be on it.

Re: 72 Suburban Build
I took the day off from work yesterday (my birthday) and did a bunch of little stuff. I painted all of my cross member parts and my control arms. My rack and pinion got here on Tuesday so I took all of it out and mocked everything up on the ground. I'll post some pics later when I get home. I do have a question though regarding gas tanks. I have the aluminum gas tank from No Limit for the C10. Will it fit on a Suburban? I'm hoping it will since I spent a lot of time polishing it up and it looks really nice (I'll put up some pics of it later too).

Re: 72 Suburban Build
I like it. Nice score. Every time I see original paint, it just makes me mad knowing that the prior owner of mine "rattle bombed" it..

Re: 72 Suburban Build
I haven't had a chance to put pictures up. I've spent too much time wrenchin!!! I pulled the Dana 60 out and swapped in a 12 bolt (main reason to get the 5 lug wheels I have on there), pulled everything off of the motor in preparation of pulling the motor and tranny, removed inner fenders and heater core/AC since the tires will hit them...
Hopefully I can pull the motor and tranny today when I get home and maybe even get the crossmember/suspension removed. I'll try to post some pics tonight. |

Re: 72 Suburban Build
Some more pics of the Burb before I started ripping it apart. I used it to haul lumber recently (16 footers!!) to build a deck.

Re: 72 Suburban Build
I ordered a bunch of motor parts (cam, gear drive, headers, etc) that should be here tomorrow. Probably going to pressure wash engine compartment today and take off the front cross member. I can't wait to get the dropmember on!!!

Re: 72 Suburban Build
Heck no!! I'm in the military and need to have it done by July because I'm transferring. The only reason I didn't start taking it apart the day I got it home is because I needed it to haul lumber!!

Re: 72 Suburban Build
Just fresh it up a little. The plugs looked great. When I get the heads off I'll see how the cylinders look. As long as they look good I'm just gonna put the cam/lifters in, a new oil pump (since I have it out and its inexpensive insurance), gear drive (I put them on everything I own, I love the sound), headers, aluminum intake and different carb. I'm still trying to decide what I'm gonna do with the exhaust. I like my stuff loud but clean sounding. I'm not going too crazy with the motor because its going to be driven A TON!!

Re: 72 Suburban Build
Very clean Burb. I spent my Navy career on the west coast, and did a few tours on the USS Halsey CG-23 back in the early '90's... Still miss it to this day.
Im looking at that cross member for my Burb. So keep the build photos coming

I put stuff up as I go with the cross member. Mine is one of his earlier versions. It's very similar though. His new ones look REAL nice and so do the arms he is making now. I have the Air Ride arms (I bought them before Porterbuilt started making his own) for mine with Baer brakes on drop spindles. |
