Cleaned up another cluster. Daughter painted the needles. Left the centers unpainted.
Not sure about leaving it all chrome or not.
Either way the hokey tach is going away.

Cleaned out my garage, and found my truck!
Started matching up the bed cross bars, and getting ready for assembly.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

yesterday, finished the new bed install in the ochre longhorn..

took about a week start to finish, what a heap of work!

Mar-K longhorn pine board kit, non-polished SS strips and bolt kit, rubber pads..

Jamestown Distributors Total Boat products;
2 coats deep penetrating epoxy, first 25% acetone
6 coats Gleam gloss spar varnish..

brushed, rolled, sanded, repeat, repeat.......

wire wheeled, primed and painted cross members for the new wood..

anti-seized everything and all hand assembled and hand tightened with ratchet..

all done on the truck, bed lifted up on blocks by hand where required..

mom helped a bunch! quality control, held bolts down while I started hardware, etc.

I'll save all the details for another thread but turned out fairly decent I think..

now everyone is afraid to put anything in it

ochre 71 longhorn done, red 71 longhorn and 65 C20 to go

Got Old Red standing tall for the run to Louisville Ky for the 50th Street Rod Nationals. Heading out tomorrow with a couple of friends for the big go. If any one on the board sees me there, stop and say Hey. Looking forward to a super week end.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

A couple minor accomplishments over the weekend.

After a few days of soaking all the lines and nuts I got the mater cylinder and distribution block removed. Soaking all the bleeders and line connections at the wheels so I can hopefully blow out the lines before I install the new master.

Sunday I thought I would quickly strip and prime one of the bed steps only do discover the finish goes in this order: clear, olive green metallic, mint green metallic, and primer. The greens and clear were laid on thick. After much sanding, blasting, and a bit of swearing I did get a quick coat of primer on the bare metal. Gotta come up with a better plan for the rest of the bed.

As is often the case when working on 40+ year old vehicles you can expect it to take twice as long and cost three times what you expected. Or vice versa. Welcome to our club.

Didnt work on it but bought a nice OEM gate for the stepper. The bottom looks like its bent laying on the table but it straight. Not dents just a little surface rust.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

More bed work. Starting to take the old wood bed out. Wouldn’t be so bad but some PO decided tongue and grove wood with a crap pot full of carriage bolts was the answer. And drill holes in all the cross sills for the bolts. Hope the sills aren’t trash when I get this out.

Also started straightening, stripping, and painting the rear fender braces. I’ll have two good sets for my project with at least one set left over. Still have a couple to take off the drivers side fender.

1970 CST truck. The bed was really ugly and had a bunch of different colors of paint. Previous owner used the truck to haul house paint. Today my wife and I are applying Herculiner bed paint. Got the first coat on and it looks great, Gonna do the second coat in about an hour.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I couldn't be happier. Three guys showed up this morning, we mounted the cab, and then the primary paint dude and I spent the next 12 hours building the body today. I'm real impressed with this guy, he led most of the day.

We have a few minor adjustments left, but basically got her done. I finished the day torquing the body mounts to minimum. and that didn't change a thing, we're square and level too. Next up are the inner fenders, mount the bed, and mark for all the moldings. Then we blast her apart for paint

There are going to be three guys working on the body and paint. My buddy, his brother and friend. They all work at the same shop. I suspect I may actually be done last next year or early the next 7-8 years I think Couple pics from today.

And yeah Grumps you were right. All those body measurements I took before I tore the truck down was a wasted effort

That turned out really good! Need to bring mine over to you....
I got my brakes done and drove the truck up to Mickey D's...the exhaust was a bit loud for the kids in the drive thru...had to shut the truck off to correct the order
First time I've had the truck out on the street in about a year...felt real good!
