Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I contracted a local machine shop to make me 3 shims for the cab-to-frame bushings and I (finally) found the correct size bolts I need to mount my new bench vise to my table.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Yesterday I received my 1/4" internal diameter fuel shut off valve and today my dad gave me a metric and SAE Craftsman socket set. I also lined up help for the truck next Tuesday.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I got a little bit done today.

The machine shop called and had my cab-to-frame shims done. Here they hang with NAPA Rust Treatment drying.....I want to make these outlast the originals!

I also mounted my new bench vise to my, um, countertop. I didn't build this garage, I just bought it and it lacks a bench! I'll have to modify the setup a bit but for the job of flaring fuel lines, this will do.

Finally I removed my in-cab fuel and vent lines so I can make their replacements and I sprayed break free (ZEP 45) onto the bolts/nuts holding the line to the frame.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Replacing the rubber brake line to the rear end and securing the fuel line were the last steps to getting it inspection ready. A broken flare nut wrench, lots of cursing and a little ingenuity with a 3 foot pipe(cheater) broke the connection and I got it done in time to get it inspected.

First time on the road since I bought it and first load hauled lol (if you can call it a load)

I took my truck out of my buddies shop where we painted the cab last week. Then I put in back into my shop while I'm waiting for the rest of the body parts are being painted. It was nice to see the new paint colour in the sun.

Unhappy Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I dreamed about my poor old '69 C/10 Shortie Stepper still waiting in the paint jail then went to an auction where I found a *very* nice 1971 GMC shortie fleetside ex fire truck with a TH350 and V-8 , 92,000 original miles and not a speck of rust anywhere.......

White with yellow side panels , it has fire extinguisher racks along both sides of the otherwise *perfect* bed .

Origin floor mat , ran *so* smoothly and quietly I didn't realize it was idling until I looked under the hood , uncut dashboard......

Did I mention I crawled underneath it and poked every seam and not a bubble of rust anywhere ? .

I should have remained and bought it , slapped my step side bed on it and plopped in my 292 L6 and TH350-C lockup tranny but SWMBO called me and said I'd locked her out of the garage and she had to take one of our Foster boys so I had to go home to let her in and then decided I don't need yet another project , I'll find out how much $ this fine truck sold for and begin crying next week .

Like an idiot I didn't even take any photos .

(Was almost this : )

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I paid off the shipping on my (new-to-me) grill guard, left a message with a member about his fenders I still want but have no place to store, did some figuring on my fuel lines, and made a bucking bar (?) out of a railroad fish plug bolt.

I just ground one end flat as I could. Ended up not using it.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Today I worked on one of the easiest and more enjoyable projects so far - Cleaning up and restoring the look of my gauge bezel. My goal is to replace the cracked and poorly painted bezel that was probably done by the previous owner. The other motive was to renew the look to go along with my new interior project over this last winter.
I must say that it is really easy to work on the bezel and gauges after reading some of the other threads on the forum. I'm waiting for a new gauge lens to arrive but disassembled, cleaned and painted the faded gauge needles today. Here are a few pictures, with more to follow in the coming days.

Here is the panel as I pulled it out:

This was by far the most faded needle that I painted - a before and after. I bought the flourescent paint at a local craft shop. It looks great, and is a nice, flat color.

All of the finished gauges reinstalled

In a few days I will show the completed dash panel

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Today I actually did more than I figured I would.....

My neighbor came down and helped me wrench these bad boys out. Even with two days' treatment of ZEP 45 (breakfree) we still had to use the 1/2 drive ratchet for some of them!

These are the 6 (I hope there's not more) bolts that held the fuel and vent lines to the frame (along with holding the brake line). I cleaned these up on the wire wheel and when the new lines are done, these are going back in!

Yesterday I finished the final sanding the inside of the hood, both front fenders, grill and cowl. Then painted them all.

That's pretty. Even though I painted it, I was too lazy to make it as pretty.
I taped mine up right over the paint.
