Re: 61K10 build

aotte1--the ones in the springs came out easy. The rear shackle ones in the frame are are staying. they have some movement so should be ok. don't want to try and drive them out and mess them up in the frame. as far asthe gears go, i changed the rear (ho33) to 3.38 as that is all that's avl. 3.31 is the closest ratio for the dana44. would like to have an NV4500 5 sp but as i have a pto on my sm420, to much work and $$$ to make it work. the 420 and the 221 t/f case make music together lol!

Re: 61K10 build

61K10,

Thanks for information, I am going to have the frame cleaned/dipped in non acid solution, so plan to remove the springs for this.

Re: 61K10 build

I think i finally got all my parts for my ft axle project. correct bushing for the ft hubs (don't have to cut the outer axle down) started on my new brake lines for the new master cyl. I still need a 1 1/2" hole saw for Captain's mounting plate hole in the fire wall. this is the only mod that will need a plug is ever wanting to put everything back to stock.

pics--old needle bearing in hub and new bushing in hub

brake line on driver's side (you can see my frame is not blasted perfect) I did the best i could with my little blasted.

I need my skinny tires!

Hey Kimble I love following this tread! I look forward to starting on my K10. First I want to do a few thinks to my K20 Burb to make it a little more friendly to drive daily.
First is disc brakes. What bushing did you use? I'd rather not turn down my axles.
Second, why did the track change on the truck? I was under the impression that by converting the closed knuckle 44 the width stayed the same. This is why I've never considered an open knuckle 44 as they are wider.
Keep up the strong work, you motivate more people than you know!

Re: 61K10 build

61K10,

Front spring and shackle removal

Getting ready to remove front spring rear shackle side plates. Last part to having all springs removed. Any special way you got yours off? Have removed the nuts and washers both top and bottom. The side plates seem to be stuck on, used a little force with no movement. Bigger pry bar?

Note: next to be removed from service manual for 63 P series trucks, you unscrew the pin from bushing. The manual has no reference for K trucks front spring removal eft., the P series trucks look similar.

Thanks,
Les

Re: 61K10 build

Les--use a bigger pry bar and a hammer. a little pressure with the pry bar and some taps with the hammer. thats how mine came off. the pin is another story. I took the org nuts and double-nutted the outside shaft. one wrench on the in side and one on the out side. (in case the pin jammed) so you could rock it back in forth. my pass side screwed out but still working on the drivers side, it's stuck. The bushings are good in the frame, at least the pass side. not going to try and replace them. Just new pins. with the bare frame you should have no problem. maybe a little heat would help.

Re: 61K10 build

Les, also if your front shackle hangers are original, the bolts are not through bolts they actually thread into a threaded solid bushing in the frame bracket. At least this is how mine were.

Re: 61K10 build

61K10 and Argonaut,

Got the side plates loose (bigger hammer), have not tried the rear shackle screw-in pins yet. Have the front ones loose.

thanks,
Les

Re: 61K10 build

Great build! I love this truck! It looks great. I have a question. I have a 60 apache that has the code rpo703a . What was the code on yours? Can you post a pic of the paint can or let me know what numbers or brand you got? My regular ppg paint store can not seem to get this color right. Thanks for the help.

Re: 61K10 build

Mine is 703a also, 60-61 color. ppg/Ditzler # is 42698. you don't want to buy ppg paint as they want $400 a gal + $100 for the hardener. my paint is urethane not enamel, bought from TCPglobal.com in San Diego ca. $150 a gal, been a couple of years though.

Re: 61K10 build

Very nice, did you replace a lot of bearing, or reuse some.
What lock-out hubs did you decide to use?

Re: 61K10 build

Les--everything in the axle is new. I put Warn locking hubs as they are older looking. Different than the spicer's of course as this is still a closed knuckle dana 44 with open knuckle spindles and wheel hubs to fit the disc brakes.

Re: 61K10 build

Mitch--You need spindles--wheel hubs--rotors--calipers from an open knuckle dana 44 and a different bushing for the spindle. just find a complete open axle for parts which would be the easiest. you could just change to a open knuckle front axle as your 12bolt probably has 3.73 gears, and it's a bolt in but not org looking.
