Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks again for the help JRod and welcome home! One more teaser. I've got a truck day approved tomorrow so hope to knock out the punch list on the lift, do the motor work, remove the topper and install the hitch and camper tie downs and wiring. That'll never happen in one day....

You gotta have goals. Maybe a little unrealistic, but might as well go for it.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks guys. Here's a shot back on the ground. List install is done. On to the motor work and camper prep and hitch install. BTW I think the B&W hitch is going to fit well.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

I always wonder will this aftermarket part work with that one? If the question is will the 16k B&W receiver hitch work with an ord 2.5" one ton flip kid, the answer is yes with a tiny bit of flapper wheel clearancing on the middle mount.

I like the tire and wheel combo.

I have a poptop 8' truck camper that I am working on for mine too. It's an old ass AMF skamper from the 1970s.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

That looks like the same hitch that came with my truck. I had to move my center mount about an inch after I shortened my frame. I'm glad you got it to work with a little grinding. The truck looks great with it's new stance.

That's the hitch I went with on the K10 before the transition, it's beefy and the price was right. Made in USA if I recall!

The beast is coming along awesome, Keep up the good work!

Looking ridiculously good there Marcus. The black wheels and period correct camper shell really round it out!

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks everybody for the compliments. Been moving at a snails pace the past few weeks with lots of other stuff going on, but think I am on track to be on the road tomorrow.

Combining all the right fittings to put the oil pressure sending unit in a happy place was a huge PITA. After a little pinch weld massaging I'm happy. Also if anyone is wondering, can you drop a BBC oil pan with the motor and all cross members installed the answer is no. I did get enough gap at the rear to replace the oil pump. Lifters are also swapped. Tomorrow need to drop the dizzy, install fuel rail, wiring, upper intake, plumbing... really need to drive the ~360 miles down to get my pop up before it wears out it's welcome in a buddy's driveway.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Ahhh, I remember that view. Not terribly fond of it either. Had to get #8 ex valve to open in order to get the VC off.

So Im guessing you didn't do the oil pump? Its going to be real nice with the new lifters. It will probably run better with those rollers getting their max lift!

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

That's my hope. A guy always needs more power. I was able to just barely snake the old pump out and new one in, so the parts pile is empty.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Had a good wrenching session today. Man the new lifters springs are soooo much smother than the hammered old ones. Got everything together just before quitting time and hit the key. I think the distributor is out 180. What a rookie movie if that's what it is. I hope that is it though because if not I'm stumped. Pretty hard to screw up anything else as all the sensors only have one plug that will fit them. It's not setting an error code at all. Anybody know if that is normal?

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Well I installed the distributor correctly the first time. Part of me is happy because I did t screw up, but I would rather know what the problem is and be able to fix it.

Procedure used on setting the lifter preload was the same as every other time I have worked on the motor. Rotate until exhaust starts to open, adjust intake. Rotate until intake starts to close, adjust exhaust. It was actually way easier than with the old lifters because everything moves freely.

So the truck cranks, sounds like it has compression, and sputters and pops, but won't fire. The whole time I've been running this motor it always lights off so quickly it surprises me. Seems to have some spark and some fuel. My logic is to throw a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and timing light on the distributor while cranking. Not setting any codes but it won't run. Any brilliant ideas???????

Did you say you replaced the fuel pump? Check the fuel pressure?

Oil pump, not the fuel pump was replaced. Confirmed it shoots fuel out the test port but I'll put a gauge on it today.

Could be crank sensor relearn? That dist has to be within 1 or 2 degrees or weird stuff happens

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Excellent idea. I recall when I installed the distributor on the engine stand last year that I could not get the rotor to line up perfectly with the 8 cast into the base of the distributor. When I dropped it in the truck it was spot on, but now it doesn't run!

I think I'll get my piston stop out, confirm TDC again and go through the whole process again. I'm getting good at tearing the top end off this motor.

Mine ran even though it was off but it kept throwing 1345 crank trigger code. I was in the middle of getting it timed with the knockoff Tech 2 and the damn thing blew up. With the T2, it's real easy. Little more work without it.

On another note, how'd your injectors look when you popped the upper plenum off? And did you do the fuel regulator while you were there? I can't tell you how much I despise the engineer that put that thing in that location!

Injectors looked great, and the FPR was a new AC Delco unit last spring. This is a good lead, I'm going to tear into it this afternoon.
