but the compressor is original.

The air is very cold, but the compressor bogs down my engine every few seconds.
It feels like an 80 mph gust of wind slams into the front of my truck, slows down, and then goes away...

I would really like to know if a new compressor would fix this...

Thanks!

Sorry I missed your question

In the early '80's GM changed to this style of compressor.
Sorry I don't have any experience with the older compressors

They do make a bolt in c notch
I have thought about some helper bags too.
And yes it is a 2 piece shaft

No problem. You are getting a lot of them. :-)

But with this style you do not experience the "bog down" I'm referring to?

My uncle and I plan to eventually pull a late-80's fuel injection engine with an overdrive tranny which would allow me to use this newer compressor.

Or, it might just be better to go the Vintage Air route.

I have the same style as Joe's on the 86 project and you can notice the rpm drop some when the clutch engages on the compressor. Not so much that it dies at idle but it is noticable. I retrofit a 92 tbi motor in it, but left out the a/c control part of the system. BTW, it is working very good!

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

I haven't driven it since I replaced the compressor, this rear end swap is a bit more involved than I anticipated. Gotta swap out the springs and get my drive shaft shortened.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll fix my sig right now

Whoa! I thought it was just a matter of changing some shock mounts and u-bolt hangers? That kinda sucks I was thinking about installing a later rear end with posi. Makes me wonder now. Be sure to document what you are doing just in case

Part of my complications are due to me flipping the axle. The springs that are in it are 52" and have several leaves removed, so when I flipped the axle the frame sits on the axle tubes. Scott had 56" springs from my parts burb, so I'm gonna throw those on.

I'll take some pics tonight

Were you planning on driving Destiny over here this weekend? Just wondering

Amazing how something you thought would be simple, ends up being a lot more. Is gonna be worth it though, well worth it. Looking slick!

Yep
That is the plan. I'm trying to work on it after work so I'll have it done to head up there Saturday.
I can't wait to drive it with the 3.73's

Oh and having a good buddy that works at a driveline shop is SWEET!

I bet he is out in the driveway putting on new U bolts. Just my guess. Or... he is out with a smile from ear to ear cruising with his new third member already all bolted in.

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

Man, I wish
I got it all put back together and guess what?
I only have about an inch and a half between the axle tubes and frame. Drove it around the block and it bottoms hard on small bumps. I'm about out of ideas. I guess flipping the axle was a bad idea. I could notch the frame, but I would need to bring the front down 4-5 inches. That's too much to do with springs IMO.
I'm also thinking about modifying my rear hangers to flip the shackle over. But that would most definitely jack up my pinion angle. I might just un-flip the axle, hope my shortened drive-shaft will still work...
What the hell was I thinking?
Scott, feel free to give me an "I told you so"

dang man, i was afraid of that when we were looking at it. Try and un flip it and if the drive shaft dont work ill look for one and we can make you one and keep that one for later.

Buy some drop spindles and have the rush shipped and we will put some C notches in it this weekend

It has 3" drop spindles on it already.
Think I'll stop by the trailer place on the way home and see if they have any perches.

Randy,
Sorry, it doesn't look like I'll be able to make it this weekend

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

No problem. My helper sold his 79 swb and his 84 lwb parts truck last night. That opened up two more spots on my yard, so we have room to navigate once again. I told my body man to take his damn car hauler trailer home, otherwise I'd end up down here borrowing it to go buy some $100 craigslist find and start filling the yard up again.
Actually almost sold the suburban last night, but he might be back. He needs front doors, suspension, serpentine setup and other odds and ends. I shot him a price (that I thought high) and he said he'd probably be calling me.... So who knows. I told him I only had plans for the tank and rear door(s).
I kept telling myself "if Joe backs out this weekend, I'm sneaking off to buy a trailer". But, I'm scared of my wife. My birthday is next week, I'd really like the normal old birthday sex you know.

Why aren't you wanting to c-notch the frame?

If you already have the 3" spindles couldn't you just cut some off the springs to make it to the 5" you are needing up front?

I even have an old pair of springs sitting here you could have if you wanted to try it. Took them out of my 87 and replaced with HD springs (I went the opposite direction). Notch that bad girl!
You're going to need a trailer when you come over.
