He's confused about the vacuum advance hose going to the HEI. The 2-barrel Rochester has a small tube coming out at the lower-front (passenger side) of the body and I told my guy that's where I though it hooks up. His carburetor guy is coming over to assist.

But the vacuum advance needs to be hooked to a ported source.
Which is a port that has no vacuum at idle. When the butterfly on the carb starts to open the port receives vacuum giving you just off idle advance.

You are correct, Joe. It should be hooked to a ported vacuum. These ports are usually up higher on the carb, above the base.

Very good. So that would be the little one (about 1/8" diameter) up near the fuel bowl?

The little port I was referring to is the stem coming out of the left side between the "float needle and seat" and "float."

Drove the truck at the shop last night.



Runs great. Some brake issues kept me from bringing it home - that will happen today. Went to get some gas (tank initially only had 4 gallons in it during motor break-in) and left it in second on the way back to the shop. Wound it up pretty good and Man, it's certainly different than the old six with TMM (too many miles).

The opening in the floor for the shifter has been butchered up a little bit and I'll need to grind off the sharp points that were necessary because of linkage clearance issues. I hope the boot kit I bought covers those sins.

No leaks anywhere - so far and I sat at a real long stop light in 85 degrees and the gauge never got above 180. Didn't do the 'punch-it slam-on-the-binders' routine as discussed previously because of the minor brake issues and my gut tells me to drive this ol' girl just like usual, without getting to radical.

#1. Item on my brake reconstruction instructions: Replace missing brake booster hose. Vendor called to say the brakes felt "a bit heavy" and I told him I'd check it out on the test drive. They were. I opened the hood at the gas station. Do'h! Went back to the shop and showed him (that'll teach me to open the hood first and actually look around).

No big deal - it's just the brakes. (glad the emergency brake works)

Yeah - I brought my camera, connection hardware and software disc to work today and I've tried to lie to the camera's system but it just says F/U.

The computer system I have to work with here has such an old version of Windows I think they used to call it PortHole and the mouse is an actual rodent that runs on a little wheel in the back of the $19.00 clone tower on my desk.

I'll take it back home and plug this gear into my fairly recent HP and see if I can get it to go. I hate having to do this stuff on my time.

Okay, Joe - got the pictures to convert from the Sony to the H/P to the clay tablet here at work, and I had to do it on my time!

.......new gas cap, filler tube, and rubber (already cracked after 6 months) - and a minor hack job on the floor (pre-boot installation) that I'll need to address......
