If I can rearrange my schedule, I can ride a bus (for free) to work a couple days a week to offset gas costs. Even if I can't, I've just got to tuff it out for 3 more years and I'm retired. Need it tow my gas guzzling 2 cycle boat around in any case. I'll do an electric fan and maybe fuel injection to buy a few more mpg's . Bottom line- I love that truck. I can do most of thew work on it myself, insurance is cheap, and so are parts. I knew hat I was doing when I bought her.

We pay $ 6.50 per gallon in the Netherlands for regular, and it hasn't stopped me yet. This weekend we have another car meeting, I will take the Camaro, and my girlfriend will take the Pickup. We just love to drive these cars. Like I said, I'll never give it up!! Cya, Edmond

I've looked at this entire thread of posts and see a commonality in many of them. It's called, being an individual. There is no one fits all, covers all answer to the high gas prices. Several years ago I owned a '65 Impala SS. Factory 4 speed, tach, console, 327/300 hp, buckets, posi. A real runner. I "sold" it, (gave it away actually back then ) in early '74 when gas was said to possibly be reaching .65 to .75 cents a gallon for the "good stuff" (Premium leaded with a 97 octane pump rating). I've been kicking my a** ever since when I look at what a really nice '65 Super Sport Impala brings cash wise on the market. My '71 4x4 gets a solid 11 mpg driving it between 55-60 mph. 4:ll gears wind it up pretty tight at highway speeds. But when I NEED a truck I HAVE a truck that will do what I need. I can work on it and I really like it when someone at a local gas'n'go asks "Who owns the blue four wheeler outside"? Is it for sale? "Mine is the answer and no it's not for sale, but thanks for asking" I sold one classic and damned if I'll sell another because of gas $$$. My .02 Cents.

Mine has been my DD for 28 years, and will continue to be so. It's just under a mile to work, though, and I used to walk at times - and could do so again if I had to, but I'm gettin' lazy in my old age! Might have trouble trying to sell our V8 Grand Cherokee, though....

I can say the thought had crossed my mind (when is it gonna be too much?), all I can say is as long as there is gas and I can still drive my truck on this earth I will be doing so. Besides where I live already tells me I can only drive it for 6 months a year at best anyway...8 cyls for summer/4 cyls for winter so I deal with it.

My answer to the prices is to stop daily driving my truck and to get my wife a new black 2 door Chevy Cobalt that gets 34 mpg on the highway a cool looking car imo plus it's not a ricer plus I got her old Chrysler Cirrus that gets 24-28 mpg depending on my foot , so with the way things are now and they stay that way I figure I'm getting close to breaking even as I drive about 350-500 miles/week and the truck got 12 mpg so it saves $70-85/ week in fuel @ $3/gallon, including the difference infuel for my wife too, enough to cover the payment, but not the $50 more per month in insurance.It does leave more time to work ony the cluster I restore and more time to slowly work on the truck to make minor improvements for th weekend drives to I get every now and then Plus my wife got the car she wanted and we all know how that goes Randy

even if i can only aford take my old trucks out for some air once a month,
ill never get rid of em!! id rather keep buying em and watch em collect dust rather than get out. once ive done finished towing every 67-72 home that i can fit in the yard and paid for em all than i can retire and watch em rot

My buddy bought a motorcycle to save gas. $4500.00 Bike $335.25 sales tax $240.00 insurance $ 25.00 plates $ 60.00 helmet $ ?? other incidentals Total $5160.25 minimum And he can't carry much or carpool. If gas is $4.00 bucks a gallon that is 1,290 gallons of fuel, at 10 miles per gallon = 12,290 miles. I was paying $2.00 a gallon so that is really a difference of $2.00 per gallon or 24,580 miles. I drive less than 12k a year now so I could drive full time for two years + for the difference of the money he paid for the bike. I can drive in the snow, carry 7 passengers in the Burb, lumber in the truck, a keg in either, tow a bike(s) on a trailer, stay dry, warm and cool and never eat a bug. The good side to the bike is that even though he is wasting money trying to save money, the gas that he saves, I'm gonna burn it up. More for me. If anyone has a 10 MPG Cheyenne Super 4x4 3/4 ton in excellent condition that they cannot afford to drive, I am in the market for one, pennies on the dollar. I mean, with gas prices like these, who is going to want to buy a gas guzzler? PM me with info and I will send email for pics. $2500.00 sound about right?

I've put too much money, work, and time into my '70 to even think of parking it now. It's too much fun to drive, anyway! Even if I figure $60 / week for gas (worst case scenario... that puts me at double my usual driving) that only allows for a $240/mo car payment instead of my gas. The reduced maintenance and insurance would probably cover the gas on a car like that...but I already know full well what you can get for a car payment like that, since we've already got a '99 Miata with that payment. It's a blast, but just not in the same way as the truck.
It certainly does make me think about going to 3.07's in the rear, though.

when gas hits $3 a gallon for regular this is going to be my ride to school. gas is at $2.95 now. costs the same amount to feed no matter how far i go and i can stop anywhere if it wants more.

Convert to propane its only a $1.49 a gallon and keep the truck.The propane burns much cleaner so motors last longer and mileage is within 5-10% of that gotten on gas. There are kits available for dual fuel conversion. We have one thats complete other than lines from tank to the unit that sits on carb available for $500.00 that includes a 80 gallon in bed tank available for sell locally.

I'm with most here, my truck only gets used for truck purposes. I'd really be hurting if if were my only transportation. the DD gets in the high teens in town and low to mid 20's on the highway. Therefore no need to get rid of the truck. I will say though that gas prices affect how much I drive it. Sometimes I do drive the truck just because I like to, but not with prices like they are.

I will NEVER get rid of my '72! My wife has a '96 Tahoe and it gets about 15mpg. But, she is a "stay-at-home" mom and has been trying hard to combine trips to cut back on miles. I also have an '04 Silverado SS that I bought last OCTOBER that only has 3,000 miles on it. I won't be selling it either! So, I'm driving a '68 Beetle that I restored about 5 or 6 years ago. I never planned on driving it every day and she's starting to fade into a "Daily Driver". But, she gets 30mpg. So, that's not too bad. I can understand how some people don't really have a choice about keeping their old, "gas-guzzling" vehicles. It wasn't that many years ago that I would have had to probably think about it too. There have been too many vehicles in my life that I had to get rid of because we just couldn't afford to keep 'em. When I look back now, though, I realize that there was not enough money to raise two kids and keep all the toys, too. The bad thing is that some people are being forced to make these decisions. Some just haven't really done the math to figure-out that the difference in cost between the old vehicle that they love (that is PAID-FOR!) and the cost of buying, insuring, paying taxes, and maintaining, will pay for a whole lot more gas than they are going to save. Even at $4.00/gal. I guess it really just boils down to the choices we all have to make. Sometimes, they can be painful! And sometimes, we all make the wrong choice and regret it later. And sometimes, the painful choice is really the right one. There are many choices in life. All we can do is try to make the best decision we can for ourselves and our families.

I won't be giving up my truck, thats for sure. I'm not sure what I'll do though. Gas is stupid right now. I'd drive my 6 cylinder convertible Comet but the top needs to be replaced. I don't know if buying a smaller car for a daily driver would save money or not. I'd have a car payment for awhile, then the added insurance cost then, where the heck would I park it? The Comet stays in the garage, and my truck and wifes car get parked by the curb. Screw it, I'll just stick it out for now.

i have a 1985 300D, gets 22ish, but diesel is like 3.50 a gallon, so i am kinda in a bad spot...If the engine didnt cost so much, i would consider throwing in a small diesel of some sort into my truck, such as the detroit diesel 3.0L V6 twin turbo...its in the same series as the diesel engine in the jeep liberty

Big trucks vs ricers? How many of you even considered which one you would rather be in, in a crash between the two? Trucks may cost more to drive, cheap insurance IMO!
I saw a VW bug that tail ended a truck and the with the motor in the rear there is not much metal there to protect you. Be careful all you small car drivers.

Cost of a new truck, less cost of my 68 = about $19,000 worth of gas. At $3.00 per gallon that is 6,333 gallons. At 15 mpg taht is 94,995 miles. I drive it about 5,000 miles per year. That is good for over 18 years. I am 69 years old. In 18 years I will be buried in it sitting in the front seat with a an open PBR in my hand the the remainder of the six pack on the seat beside me with the rear slider open so I can throw the empties into the back. Gas prices have doubled since I have joined this board. I will be glad to buy 3 or 4 67/68 trucks in good condition for half their value so I can enjoy them during the next 18 years. I drove my 68GMC that restored, for 12 + years. I had $15000 invested , sold it last month for $5500. I figure that at about $50 a month + gas (12.6 MPG) to drive one awesome truck for 12 yrs.
Now my 69 GMC 454 BB LWB 4x4 Stepside 12.8 MPG, that took me just over 7 years to build, it going to bring me a whole lot of enjoyment over the years. I am in the Air Force and I could get killed on one of my mission's or driving to church???? I for one, am going to drive my old truck and enjoy ever single minute of it, for I may die tomorrow.
