I have a friend in Texas, he has 2 california registered vehicles there. CA says "you don't have to smog since you're out of state military." However, Ft. Bliss requires that vehicles have a current TX inspection sticker to get post decals. So he has to pass the post safety inspection. I think that would also require emmissions if his vehicles weren't too old. Colorado could require the same thing... |

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
yep, like i said, I looked into reenlisting with a PCS to Ft Carson, and the packet I recieved from Carson straight up said in it that I'd have to get smogged.

Guess I lucked out with my base commander at Travis AFB CA. Kept my MS plates. No smog, did not have a MS inspection sticker either. Edit: You could keep your vehicle off base.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
The engine and tranny were installed earlier today. All the smog has been a pain.A guy from K.C. came down last night,THANK GOD FOR HIM,he is a very knowlegable guy.If it was just me and Josh,well.... we would be beat. The guys name is Ed.Josh and Ed have maybe 2 hours of sleep since yesterday.I told them that I had beds they could sleep in.I couldn't get them to take my offer. One sleep on some pad in my garage and the other on a creeper. They have very little left to do.I will post more info later.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
I have no problem with Josh, his truck was in my yard with the rod knocking. I am discussing the fact that the Military bases are imposing so many constraints on those that enter them to match the Locals (such as SMOG garbage) just to have the priviledge of parking on base---while the owner is gone for months at a time, to do the thing that is needed. When I was in the military, the bases didn't care about those things---and I was in California (the smog capital of the U.S.).
It doesn't matter that the base has a rule to get the truck smogged, but the fact remains that whatever the State of Georgia has for smog rules is WHAT that smog check station has to support, because the truck is licensed in the Great State of Georgia---believe it or not--that is all Josh has to meet. I am happy to hear that Josh and the others are getting the motor together, there is nothing easy in a deal such as this, since everything is rusty from daily use. One has to approach it from a common sense point of view. Hopefully they will get enough rest, so he doesn't fall asleep on the rode once he is done. By the way, I am still glad I got out of the military years ago-----I think that things have change seriously over the years, as to what the Government thinks is important to keep the Locals happy. I did my time off the coast of Vietnam ---- more than once. I must be an Old Fuddy Duddy by now. Last edited by piecesparts; 05-21-2006 at 09:42 AM. |

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
Josh left around 1:30 p.m. today.Everything is blurry. We actually got started on his truck at a little after 8:00 p.m. on friday.Stopped at 5:00 am.Slept a couple Hours(I couldn't get them to sleep in the beds I had availiable.Ed slept on some carpet pad I had laying in the garage and Josh slept on my creeper. )We ,well....mostly them,...worked up until somewhere around 3:30a.m. sunday???Ed left short after that and Josh slept on my couch(again I offered a bed)
The first pic of Ed and Josh. 2nd pic..Ed and Josh 3rd Josh and me 4th Josh,me and Ed The 5th is Ed going home Ed is an amazing guy,He gave up a weekend he had planned to do bike stuff to help Josh.Without him it would have sucked.I never heard a complaint out of either one.I am 43 years old and have learned one of the, probably most important leason I have experieced in my life by meeting these two indiviuals.I learn this lesson through watching how they handled themselves in a time of tribulation and working side by side in oil, grease, gas, anti freeze, dark of night and a hot Kansas sun beating down on us.These two men have great character, endurance, perseverance and confidence.I learned that kindness is not a weakness but,it is strength.I may never see these two guys again in my lifetime but I will not soon forget them.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
Glad to hear that you got him running. I thought, from the conversation on Thursday afternoon, that he was going to do it here at my house, but he was gone when I got home. Hope he makes to Ft. Carson, without any more problems.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
Hey guys, I'm here. Sorry for any confusion but I am in Wichita. I HAD to sign in with the local recruiter to avoid being AWOL. Now I have to crash here at an old army buddys place tonight and wait and see what they say in the AM. If they cut me loose I will be Carson bound by noon.
Just want to say thanks to all for being so damn nice! All the calls, good wishes and such (even if you couldn't make it) made the difference. I have to agree with Scott, Ed is an awesome guy. But I don't think Scott is taking enough credit. He was right there most of the way. He had some family obligations but he still made it right back when he could. After all it was his driveway, his cherrypicker, and most importantly at 7 am Saturday morning, his creeper (pretty comfy one too). This is a trip I too will never forget and I feel like I have made some lifetime friends. |

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
Hey all, how's it hanging?
Just thought I'd jump on here and thank Scott for putting up with us and helping out to get Josh back on the road. I must say that I've never met finer folks and I had a great time this weekend. Seriously, I had more fun than you could ever expect to have under the circumstances! These two are fantastic to hang out and work with. I just spoke to Josh on the phone about the surging issue, and he's going to take the truck to the dealership where he bought the engine and have them double check the timing setting and such, just to be sure it's all ok. I'm confident that they'll do him right, and the extra check will be worth a mint in peace of mind for him. Scott, shoot me an email with your contact info, and I'll send you mine. DODELL1@kc.rr.com I meant to exhange with you Sunday morning before I left, but we were all a little scattered by that time and forgot. Anytime you're up this way you're more than welcom (expected even, LOL) to stop in for a cold one. I'm glad to see that the community spirit is alive and well in other realms than just bikes. After reading this thread I'd like to thank everyone here who did what they could do to arrange help for Josh. That's the way everything in this world should work, and it makes me feel good to see as least some of us are keeping it alive in our own small part. |

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)
I just talked to Josh on the phone. He is almost to Hayes, Ks and is still having a possible timing or carb related problem. If there is somebody close by that has a timing light he could possibly use could you call him on his cell phone 910-728-6193. He also said the choke light came on and has been on all day.
