Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

Is ther a special school that previous owners go to in order to come up with ideas like, "It won't fit Earl, let's just tear a new hole until it does!

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

It's too hot to grind rivets off the frame today so I decided to clean up my tranny cover.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

I hope these things are easier (I know it's more complex, but I'm thinking sweat a tude here!) to reassemble than to take apart!

I need to get that other x-member and some other bits off so I can get the frame stiffeners out and restore that area. Whuff.... "Rust Never Sleeps."

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

I had to replace that same "dogbone" looke crossmember. Mine was growing rust like yours. Once it came apart mine had a hole in the frame. I replaced it with a piece of steel and a board member in Arizona sent me a new crossmember.

Gotta love that living rust...

Bet you're getting good with the cutoff wheel and air chisel....

by the way, I replaced all those rivets with grade 8 bolts with lock washers from Tractos Supply. Nice that they have them in bulk... I bet I did nearly 100 total

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

I think I'm going to end up needing about 30 or so. Is it worth melting a bead on the replacement bolts when it's back together, or is lock tight suffcient?

BTW: Are you planning on Carlisle in two weeks? I've been working on the better half about finding some seats... lol

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

I'll be there,,, what kind of seats are you looking for?

I just used bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts. I wish I would have bought nylock nuts but I can always replace some if needed. TSC is pretty cheap for the hardware though...

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

I'm doing a statis drop in front, so I am getting the rust off my springs. The bucket is full of viniger and softener salt, the battery is out of an old lawnmower and the charger is keeping the battery going.

Yes, it is. I'll see how it works out. If it flakes off I can always pull 'em and redo them with real brake paint. I mostly wanted to get he patina off after spending so much time cleaning them up. lol

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

The rust removal system works so well that my anode disintegrated. lol... ate the alligator clip on the jumper cables... I had to rig something new up (and make sure that only my sacrificial wrench was in the solution this time) to continue.

Here is the first spring with the rust inhibiter setting. The second spring is in the vat.

Also -- here are the rear springs for comparson purposes.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

Springs are all cleaned up now... next step will be to remove a coil.

The rears are not going back in. A pair of Firestone 2600s are taking their place.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

The rear is going to sit on air but the front is going to be a static drop.

I'm using 3" drop spindles in the front and shortening the springs.

The rear is getting bagged and a pair of Porterbuilt trailing arms to replace the rusty ones I pulled out.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

Another part showed up today. I got this from a bracket racer from the other side of WV for $40.

It's a 750 with vacume secondarys (3310 carb) It's gonna need cleaned and kitted, but I still like the deal.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild

More boxes showed up today... Firestones and the 3" drop spindles. Just waiting on the intake manifold and the trailing arms and panhard from Nathan.

Oh, you can see I rebuilt and painted that carb too. The truck is going to be a black and orange theme throughout.
