Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

Well, I got a bit more done yesterday. I got the airlines ran, and the rear shocks mounted. A piece of advice for all you newbies out there like myself, don't do any plasma cutting around freshly ran airlines... DOH! Also, the fitting that was in the left front bag was leaking. I had to remove the upper plate since I just couldn't get it to stop leaking. Once I replaced the fitting it was all good.

Frenchblue72, i guess it depends on what you are looking for. I don't really care for them because you can see the bulb at night. Thats why I like the non "Euro" ones. I will see if i can get a couple pic's of it when it gets dark out, let you be the judge.

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

VERY VERY SICK BUILD! i want the same thing on my fleetside...

but if i may say one thing welder to welder i now the wieght of the truck is being held in front of your Frame notch. It would take a whole lot of wieght in the back to bend it but just 2 cents would be to box the spot where you notched it on the inside and possibly run a 1/4-3/8 flat gusset on the outside just to make sure nothing goes wrong.

done alot of gusseting on lowriders (hydraulics) and the brunt force tears these things apart.

I was thinking the same thing. I had been re-browsing through a bunch of the builds on here and I was coming to the same conclusion. Thanks for you advice and I am going to take it. It can never be too strong.

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

Sorry fellas, no new updates. I have been working some insane hours and I haven't had a day off in quite some time. In fact I just got home from work and I have to work tomorrow. I haven't touched the notch yet although I did start wiring the valves and compressor up. I would suggest doing a notch I just would do one so you can get it an inch or two lower. The pic below shows how low it can go with factory bumps stops and no notch.

I hope that helps

Yeah, the air dam is off, I just don't have any pictures of it yet...

I'm stuck back down in FL now dealing with a little wind and rain from Tropical storm Fay. Maybe one day I will get to work on it again.

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

After working for about a month straight I finally got a weekend off, heck it was a three day weekend. It feels like summer break when I was in school, freakin awesome.

Well I had done some work to it during the evenings so I was able to get a lot done this weekend. I got the Watts link almost done and the bed put on to figure out what and where I need to trim. I had to trim more than I had wanted to to get it to sit down without hitting the tire. I wish now I had got the backspacing that I had wanted it would have made things a ton easier. It still rubs when fully laid out put I really can't trim any more out of it so I guess it will do for now.

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

I got the bed put back on for good now. Watts link is insatlled (let's hope it works) and now all I need to do is get the front shocks mounted, replace front brakes lines, get it aligned and I think it will be good to drive, at least for a little while.

do you have any issues with the front tires hitting the hood hinges? in the pics of it aired out, it looks like the rear of the hood is up...

To anwer your question... Yes, they hit the inner portion of the fender. The hood did that before but not that bad. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do with it. As of now, I don't have any wheel wells and I don't like driving trucks without them. Makes it tough to keep the motor clean. So when I finally am able to take time off of work I am going to fab up some new wheel wells and hood hinges while I am at it. But that probably won't happen until late Feb.

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

I started on the inner wheel wells yesterday. i really didn't make a lot of progress but I did get it to where the tires don't hit when the truck is aired out. I am trying to figure out now if I am going to use the original wheel wells after some modifying or if I should make some. Hmmm, what to do?
