If you asked the question. How many Johns on the site. I think that thread would be the biggest....

Great build up for your 3/4! I'm at the beginning stages of the frame clean-up. Big fan of the POR-15 as well! Nice job!

Re: '89 3/4T 'burb front-end swap to '66 C20
what do you mean by "K" member(K stands for 4x4). if you are asking whether or not that a 73-87 frt axle fits in place of the 62 axle you would have to measure as unfamiliar with the spring spacing and the axle perches. the later (73-87) does fit in place on the 64-66 frt axle. spring perches have to be moved a little on the rear axle 64-66

Re: '89 3/4T 'burb front-end swap to '66 C20
I believe the 'K member' that iehotrod is referring to is a common term used for the front suspension crossmember on a vehicle.
To answer your question iehotrod, yes the '73-'87 'K member' will work on a '60-'62 frame. It is a little more work than on the '63-66's as there are more holes that need to be drilled. I know there are a thread or two on here that give more insight.

Re: '89 3/4T 'burb front-end swap to '66 C20
Hilander you are the reason I tore into my truck, I read your thread and said well I can do that, it only took you 3 days and I am now on 10 months, but we are close to completely frame off---ing my 66 1/2 ton gmc. Thanks for the inspiration. Kieth
It started out looking like this: http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...67555158_RNLWE Got stripped down to this: http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...38809030_eUypo Put back together starting here, using a 91 burb 2wd chasis: http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...05_PwoKs-X2-LB And right now it looks like this: http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...847715_ctDzSfp All due to your inspiration-------thanks, what am I saying should I thank you for all this pain, loss of play time, money, busted knuckles ? Maybe I take that all back----------------ha ha thanks again, Kieth It should be running in a couple of weeks..... |

Re: '89 3/4T 'burb front-end swap to '66 C20
well, you're welcome I guess...
Johnny and I were trying to give a good "how-to" documentation of the front end swap. Given the response this thread has received over the years, I think we were successful. Keep in mind my brother that my 66 is no where near the state of completion yours is! Nice truck!!! In fact it's pretty much in the same state it was at the end of the front end swap! Now I have to move to Bakersfield and the restoration is once again put on hold. BUT..... I will have the means to finish it when I get settled in at Bakersfield since I will be making a lot more money, and spending a LOT less on rent, utilities, groceries, commuting, etc.. also there are many more resources for parts and donor trucks where I'm going than where I live now. I must say though, that I will miss my good friend and truck partner John terribly when I go. We have had a lot of good times together working on our trucks and trolling through junk yards.

Re: '89 3/4T 'burb front-end swap to '66 C20
This is just the information I was looking for!!! Geez, I love this forum. I have been looking for the answer if I can just swap a C20 crossmember and all just like a C10 crossmember and here it is complete with pictures.
I know this is an old thread as well, but I hope all is well with you still, healthwise and on a personal level. Side note, I used to be stationed out at Fort Irwin and have been through Bakersfield a time or two. Desert life wasn't for me, but it does have its own beauty and it sure is nice for having wide open spaces and awesome sunsets/temps at night. |

Re: '89 3/4T 'burb front-end swap to '66 C20
Hidey-Ho Chevy brothers! just checkin' in on this old thread!
Me & Johnny had a blast putting my '66 together that week. I remember the harrowing test drive after - sheesh what a ride! The clamp on the rag joint was stripped and the steering wheel was, uh shall we say, "less than responsive"! We had just as much fun a few months later scrapping out his '81 C10! My health is holding and I'm just getting ready to start back in on my truck. The truck is running great today. I still drive it to work now & again. We hauled our 26 ft Airstream camping trailer down 300 miles from Vacaville to Bakersfield when we moved. We had a few problems with the trailer, but the truck ran like a charm!
