Automotive clearcoat on bed wood, how do i get the color?

That's the forum.It has lots of info on waterproofing wood.The epoxys they use are marine grade and do come at a $$$$$.

I found the forum with no issues...it was finding the info within that was a problem.

I tried clear epoxy on my 55. lasted about a year, then started to peel at the edges. Problem is that wood WILL expand as the moisture content changes. A rigid plastic coating like epoxy, varnish or urethane will not change size so it splits at the edges first. My 68 now has a flexible coating: Two coats of teak oil, covered by several coats of tung oil on all four sides, then paste wax. Need to paste wax regularly. Holding up so far.....

Im hearing good things about the teak oil with a coat of teak guard on top for UV protection...
How long have you has been using the teak and tung oil products on your 68 ?Any pics you could post would be appreciated.

It's been on there 2 1/2 years with no change, but it is garage kept. It's white oak so it is closed celled wood I would never use red oak, it's open pored and rots easily. Remember that the originals were oiled Southern Yellow Pine, which is somewhat rot resistant because it's so full of sap. Whatever method you finally select, make sure to do all four sides to keep the moisture content same top and bottom. This prevents cupping.

The teardrop trailer folks are having success with clear epoxy because they are applying it over this plywood. Since Plywood has layers bonded to each other at right angles, it is dimensionally stable (won't expand lengthwise or widthwise with changes in moisture). Since the plywood used is very thin, they wont have much expansion in that direction either. I agree that putting a top coat of automobile clear will help with UV damage. Marine epoxies such as West System (very expensive) and Raka already have UV inhibitors.
BTW, never use polyester resin on plywood, it will separate after a while.

hi im a floor guy(30 yrs) i do a lot of teak,mahogany... Australian oil great finish 5-7 yrs w/heavy traffic i just put a pressure treated 5/4 bed in my truck and used it. available at better paint stores
