I was doing a forum search for storing the jack, in addition of some tools, and came across this thread again.
I really like the idea of putting a box under the hood on the passenger side.

Right, went to bootfair this morning with some friends who slept over last night.
Got lots of bits n bobs.

Then right at the end, last stall, there was a steel trunk.

Asked the price..... Got it for £10.00

Been looking for a trunk to bolt into the rear of the truck to act as seat at shows, safe box for tools, jack etc and another bit of "personal decoration" to add.

Brought it home and now have to decide what route to go.

Outside is completely rusted on the surface.
Inside has been painted at some point.
It also has "The Times of India" from 4th of July 1945 stuck in the bottom, fairly messed up, but we want to protect or keep it in there.

Advice needed please How do I keep the interior with the paper stuck to it in one piece and what way is the best for the outside?

My thoughts are clear varnish inside and clear lacquer on the outside with some pinstriping later when I can afford to have it done.

Latches are all brass.







After various tasks today, by about 4pm I got started on the Steel trunk I am bolting into the rear of the truck to keep the jack, some tools and anything else "valuable"



Firstly I hand sanded the trunk, then in a fit of genius popped into the woodwork shed and got this little beauty out (found it at the tip years ago)



Photographed the latches as well, as it seems there may be somebodies military force number on the side latches. If anyone knows how to research the numbers, please do and fee back on here.



POSSIBLE LEAD AS TO ORIGINAL OWNERSHIP.



Once sanded back, I cleaned it three times with fresh cloths and thinners.



Then laid out the letters to get an idea of what size I will need for the name I want to add. Just in case you are trying to decipher, it will be 1966 in the bottom line, I just did not have another 6 stencil.



Masked it all off.




The process I am following is being made up as I go along, so never done it before, but logic says it should work.... to create a look of Fake Patina I am layering paint and colours randomly. I will leave this to dry and harden for the week, and then sand it back a lot by hand with water paper, untill it looks right. Then I will use the stencils one letter at a time and either spray or use a bit of foam to dab the paint over the letters, then do a very fine flatting again, after which I will coat the whole thing is Clear lacquer.

Couple of thick coats of primer to use as base.



Then a load of random colours, interdispersed with gold.



Finally a coat of Gold, overlaid with the lovely lurid green you can see.



Unmasked and put away, I was so tempted to stencil today as well.

Hopefully will get around to the grease gun next weekend.

I'm in the process of sorting out a box for the back of my 66 stepside. The box itself is an ex Royal Air Force box that was used to store blankets, uniforms etc, which is quite apt as my truck is ex USAF. Its big and solid and can be used as a seat as well. When fitted in th centre it will leave a small gap each side for storing jerry cans etc.

This was what it looked like when I got it:



I wanted to 'make it mine' and have a play with my pinstriping brushes, this is the start of the lettering on the front side:



Added some more to the lettering:


Added some ham fisted pinstriping (its been a while since I did any!):


Have added a sugar skull and some webs to the top:




The box is currently with a mate being clear coated to protect the patina as it matches the paint beat up paint on the truck.

I'm gona sticker bomb the inside of it with suitable old school hot rod, tattoo studio etc stickers.

After making some wooden bedsides for the truck tonight, it brought us to 8.00pm and with loads of daylight left, and Mickey clearly not ready to go home to sleep in front of his telly, I decided to quickly sand back and distress the steel trunk Nicola and I found and bought two weeks ago.

Using a pointed orbital type sander, I worked the paint back.



Then found just the right red paint for the lettering of the stenciled words that needed to get onto the trunk.
Got going with help from Mickey, again not wanting to miss the opportunity to keep busy.



Stenciling all done.



Time for some more random paint of the top and also to sand back a bit more rust to create this Fake Patina.

Next up once dried for a few days, I will sand back by hand and leave little of the red paint, followed by a few coats of clear lacquer.

After which I will fit the trunk to the rear bed of the truck.

I actually like vintage tool boxes that go across the bed side to side. I've got one from the I think 80s to 70s for my '76....I'll be running it with some striping and all. Really kool thread.

I bolted the trunk down in the back of the truck last night, here is the finished article:

I built two of these, one for the stuff I might need in a pinch (on the D/S), the other for my wife to have a storage compartment (on the P/S)...




They are heavy enough and the outdoor carpet will not let them slide around.
I found the blue carpet at the Dollar General Store (4X8'). My wife and I drove around to 4 different D.G. stores buying the blue carpet from each one! ha (takes 2 rolls per box)
The plywood is 22/32in, and I primed and painted the boxes before I put the carpet on with staples from a staple gun. I made the handles from rope I bought at Lowes, cut to length.
They work really well, plus our small Ice chest fits into them with room to spare.

Found a couple more like it for sale. Won't fit a short stepper but I gotta check the seat and see if it'll fit under. Might just get one any old ways.

Anybody else out there got old advertising/sales boxes like this for their trucks, tools, etc. Love to see em.
