Yes, Canada is just a little a drive.

I'm seeing 3/4 ton and 1 ton 14 bolts around here for around $100.
I'm surely going 1-ton. I might as well, the complete front crossmember I got from a guy around the corner from my house is off a 1-ton 79.
The only thing I'm still trying to determine is the best gear ratio to pair up with the SM465. The big box puts my truck at about 5000#. If I was to pull another one of these trucks behind me, I wonder if the 3:73 would still be fine matched to the SM465.

For your intended use of this truck, I would look for a 14 bolt with 4.10 gears. The 14 bolts that were under the 1 ton cab and chassis trucks are a little narrower than the ones under the single, and dual wheel trucks with a pickup box. Also since you're bascially building a 1 ton, you could also use a Dana 70, which were used in 1 ton GM's, Fords, and Dodges.

I've told you guys that under the almond color paintjob the truck is county orange.
The box and all came from the factory county orange.
Under every nook and cranny it's county orange.

Well today I just discovered another neat possibility;
you can see a slight outline of a circle on the door.
The circle's diameter is around 16"
I'm hoping that I'll be able to safely remove the paint to expose who really owned this truck.

According to the sheet, I'm going to drop about 200-300 rpm at 55.

Okay, I'm convinced.
It idles great, and cruises great, but it stutters when I punch it from low rpms under load. I haven't changed a thing regarding timing, or otherwise.
Engine ran and accelerated just fine when it was in the suburban.
I could just systematically check all possible vacuum issues, but then again, getting a non-emission carb seems to make more sense.

Those parts do need some attention soon....

However; it's the engine that stutters or misses pretty bad when I punch it.
Everything is fine, acceleration and cruising, as long as I don't punch it.

Another project that I wanted to wait until spring/summer to tackle has just been bumped up to next on my list; the axle swap to a 4:10 14-bolt ff.
Fortunately, I already found one from an old friend of mine.
So stay tuned.
I've seen many threads on these swaps for 1/2-tons, but very few on the 3/4.
So I will try to document the project and provide pics.

I hope to start on this around the middle of this month.

I had a break in my work schedule, so I decided to pull the Eaton axle out.
I tried whimpingly to unbolt the u-bolts with a 4' pipe extension on a breaker bar - no luck.
So I cut them.
The torque put on these u-bolts is amazing, when I had a little more than a 1/16" to go, the u-bolt snapped apart.

I was told in these forums you should replace the u-bolts either way, and this pic proves that recommendation:

I had taken some measurements earlier for these two axles, but today I decided to measure the circumferences of them to get a more precise measurement.

Eaton:
Circumference imperial & metric units =
10-5/8" & 26.85cm



Corporate 14Bolt FullFloater:
Circumference imperial & metric units =
10-3/4" & 27.20cm



..
So, the 14Bolt ff has a circumference of 3.5mm larger than the Eaton.

This translates to less than 3/64" difference in Diameter.

Yeah, it really isn't worth the effort to try and save the U-bolts. Unless you know for sure they are in good condition. I've got the parts for the mounts on order with the laser cutter. You'll have them when you get back.
