Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Actually no it must be a later block because the head bolts I picked up were WAY too long and they were for an '01 6.0. I need to return them and get the correct bolts for Tuesday when I want to get the heads on and install this sucker in on Wednesday.
The fuse block is a simple 4 panel I ordered from the local Auto Zone part number 85668. The engine is getting the stock LQ4 treatment down to the engine cover, should give the truck a nice reliable powerful daily driver feel with hopefully decent fuel mileage to boot But with 6 liters of displacement I can't expect anything more than tire burning torque and excellent throttle response so if I want good fuel mileage I better keep my foot out of it....ya right I will post an update when I get bolts and prep the truck for the longblock. It's almost there, getting restless to fire it up

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Correct head bolts are on thier way, tomorrow will be heads and valvetrain.
Going to pull the spare block out of the truck too and do some more cleaning and painting, then trim the engine plates and get the flexplate to bolt up the TH700 converter. Getting closer, when the longblock is in I will feel much better Will post pics of the progress

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Yes, sometimes I get lucky but mostly it seems not
More progress today, heads are on, valvetrain is together and the long block is complete Tomorrow is off to trimming and drilling my engine plates, modifying my flexplate and finally getting this engine in the truck. Here are a few pics of today's activites. Oh, sharp eyes will notice the valve covers are not right this has been corrected.....

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Engine is in
What a day, lots of cutting, drilling and finding the right bolts for what I needed. Went in without fuss, I think my 350 put up more of a fight. Still dirty looking though, actually much cleaner looking in person but I do drive this truck alot and work it. I don't feel it's usless effort to detail but in no time it will look pretty much like it does now so efforts are going to the drivetrain and not making it showy, which is against what I usually do so I am fighting instincts here. Big hurdle for me getting this bolted in, now I can start the bolt ons like water pump, alt bracket, harness, exhaust, fuel system manifold etc. Cant wait to turn it over and hear this engine run. Truck looks happy now

Yes! Looking good!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have ample room to get the damper pulley on? Last edited by 5150.4.67; 02-24-2011 at 02:34 AM. |

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Thanks everyone!
I like the way it just bolted in, like it was made to be in there. I know I have read that before but first hand experience it really holds true. Thanks Jay, yes there is plenty of room to do the install. I was going to do this before I put the engine in but instructions show to put 240lbs of torque to the old bolt, pull it out then do 37lbs and 240 degrees of twist with a new bolt. I did not think an engine stand was a stable platform for doing this kind of wrenching so in it went and I will brace the flexplate near the starter space and get this done that way. Next I am not sure what I will be doing but it will most likely be the balancer, water pump, power steering/alt bracket, and doing the mods to run my old school guages. Tapping the oil cooler plate will do for the oil pressure fitting and somewhere on the water pump or adapter for the head where the new style water sender is.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
If you are going to buy an oil cooler plate, check out the F-body (I think). They have a port built in for oil pressure...... I'll double check and get back to you.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Thank you guys, I am pretty stoked
Jay, I ordered one from the local dealer already that matches the engine so I will end up working with that one or I can try tapping into the oil passage at the back of the block. I did see someone had done this before, all I would think I need is a metric hollow extension or tube that I can tap into. I will look at more options, Summit may have something I need to order a pulse pass through speedometer do thingy for my VSS signal anyway Working tonight, tomorrow I will be outside wrenching unless the rain stops me we will watch the forecasts tonight and hope for sun.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
not much happening today, I ran into a roadblock when I could not get the balancer started onto the snout of the crank. I do have a balancer install kit but I guess the LS engines need a special fitting. I will inquire about this at my local AutoZone or Kragen and see if the rent something that will work.
Other than that just messing around today.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Throw the balancer in the oven for 5 mins at 200, slide it on. Or get a M16 x 2.0 pitch x 120mm long bolt to get it started.
Some say to install the balancer with the cover bolts loose then tighten them after the balancer is on to prevent the seal from leaking. |

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build
Great idea, I was thinking about the same thing but was not sure if the front seal would like the heat but with underhood temps and oil temps I imagine 200 or even 300 would be pretty safe
