Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Man, that stinks. I have a couple of shortbed frames (one (6 lug) with posi rear and a 2/4 drop-but trailing arms) and one completely stripped you could swap your leafs onto... Or you could find one closer. Or as you said you can plate this frame up.

I know you were looking for a cab also. Try to find one out west that was a true swb bb super truck and then you could use that title/spid and have your true bb swb if you wanted.

On the engine brackets/pulleys...take some overall shots of the engine. Looks like you have the correct PS parts from the pics and the alt looks correct from what I can see...

If you have all that stuff correct and a good motor at least to rebuild you've got 2K in value just in engine/brackets...

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

I think if i plate the frame, or even box it in, it will be fine. Its lasted quite awhile being put together like that.I don't know who welded it, but i'd like to meet them, to get that so perfect and clean the outside of the frame so you can't notice it, is amazing.

I'll grind around them, make sure there are no cracks, and go from there.
I have another SWB frame, its really ruff.

The cab i'm trying to find one out west, i've talked to acouple dealers, one didn't have any way to ship, the other was really rude, kept putting me on hold, and telling me to call back in a couple weeks (HUH couple weeks?) He had a shipper.

I want to get a good cab, with A/C, all the trim holes, cargo light hole, and high hump hole, although i can make my own high hump if i have to as well as the pass side heat shield mounts.

If i'm going to spend a grand on a cab and $5-600 shipping. I'm going to get as close to what i want as i can.

Other than that, first order this weekend with not having any kids, is to strip it down to the bare rolling frame. Take it out and Sandblast the begesus out of it. and paint it.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

The seller sad he would find me a 6ft frame, which i thought was very noble of him, but the cost of me going back down to get it, isn't cost effective, so i'm going to pass. I did thank him though.

Here are some pics from last night, took awhile to get the fenders off, and bag everything, I broke the condenser lines and it was held in my bailing wire.

Looks to me like the truck sat outside completely stripped down, there was blue tarp pieces stuck under the AC box and the brake booster, so i'd say it was covering the motor. The pass side fender must have been upside down, because it was rusted out on the very top (how else could this happen?) and there was a nice water mark on the inside.

Anyway. I'm going to rip the cab off today and get the motor our tomorrow to start working on the frame.

The core support looks to be in very good shape, can't wait to sandblast it and paint it.

I went to Good Guys in Ft Worth, TX today, and ran across this BB Air Cab that I thought you may want to check out. It also had several boxes inside with who knows what in it. As you can see in the pics, it's already attached to a pallet, ready to be shipped.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Damn!!!! Thanks Zoomin. I wonder what shipping would cost for that. Looks like a little rust, but its 400 times better than mine. I'll have to give him a call, after i find a shipping quote.

Those scratches or dents on the back corners.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Last set for today. I have run out of money, so when i pull the motor and tranny, i'll do my blasting and start to scrap up enought to buy new suspension bushing kits brakes and ebrakes. I had to cut the e-brake as it was so bad i couldn't get it apart.

Motor was built 1/7/72

GM 9T? whats that mean?

Thanks for looking.

GM9T refers to the pattern numbers for tracing which foundry poured them.

Sure must be nice to have Tow Mater and that lift - you're making good progress.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Thanks Zoomin, believe it or not, i bought that lift, 9500pound for $500. When the chevy dealer went out of business, we bought the building (not a smart move cause the economy tanked 8 months later) and before they emptyed the place, i bought that lift, and a 25k pound drive on lift which is still in the shop here at work, and we use it for working on some of the boat yard equipment.

And i gotta say, mater. I was thinking of fixing him up and resaling, but i think thats the best money i spent!!!

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

NEW post for information purpose, i need to compile a list of parts for my frame components rebuild. That is my focus at this point, a cab will have to wait.

I need a complete front rebuild kit. I'm not going to lower it, i'm going to stick with stock height since i have a leaf rear.
I have already bought the lowing components for the stepside 72, which will be done in 20 years or so.

So who or where would be your recommondation for the best place to buy, ball joints, sway bar bushings, fuel lines(Stainless?), brakes, shocks, etc. Napa? Carquest? A supporting vender?

I'm also going to replace all the front crossmember bolts, should i use grade 8?

I'm also going to do some boxing around the cut area as its not a Z cut. I understand complete boxing is not good, it make the frame to rigged, can effect ride? I'm thinking maybe just have my guy box from the middle back, and put a bunch of 3inch holesaw holes along the way (Trucks did it this way on the b4000 truck).

Thanks all, any info would be great.

Moog parts are recommended as the best. Check with Early Classics or CPP but also shop around since I know you're on a budget like me. I found 9/16 lower U-bolts for the lower A-arms at napa for cheap
I'm also going to replace all the front crossmember bolts, should i use grade 8?
I went grade 8 on mine. Lowes carried all I needed cheaper than I could get online and have shipped to me
