I've heard those plates are flat, not stamped. It might look good from a distance but not what I was hoping for.

Not sure where you heard that but it's not true. They will be stamped just like all other CA plates. I think the only difference between original and the new ones will be the new ones have reflectorized background.

Here is blurb form DMV:
"California Department of Motor Vehicles Cliff Costello -The final design of the black 1960 Legacy plate is similar to what is appearing on DMV’s internet site for the Legacy plates http://www.dmv.ca.gov/legacyplates/index.htm The background will be reflectorized plate sheeting, as required by statute, with yellow embossed (raised) “California” and embossed yellow characters for the plate configuration. You should receive the pre-ordered legacy plates in approximately 9 – 12 months. Keep watching our website for updates on the Legacy Plate Program http://www.dmv.ca.gov/legacyplates/faqs.htm"

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

Plates in Nevada used to be blue w/white letters.

You could buy a yellow tinted cover for them at any car wash in town. Then it looked like the old B&Gold California plate from any distance.

The police pretty much left California driver's alone for the casino business, so if you had the cover over your plate, you didn't worry too much.

X200 Rich, not what I was looking for either! If you go to the DMV office they have "sample" plates to give you an idea of what they look like.

Are you saying they are flat when DMV states they are raised letters? What do they look like?

The key words "are similar" to the 60's style, go to the DMV and ask to see their examples of the plates and see for yourself that they look nothing like the originals,.....that's why they have not reached their quota to order them.

I think I'll go make my own.

Actually they have met the Quota already and then some for the black plates at almost 11K orders.

They can't make exact replicas because of the mandates in place for license plates now, but it is an alternative to the ugly new plates. You can make your own, but I think the first time you get pulled over you will be getting new plates again as it is illegal to alter a plate from original in CA.

As far as I know, there is no example's of the new legacy replica black plates to see at DMV near me. That's why I was wondering if you saw the Black legacy example plate yourself? Just trying to get an idea of what you think is different to the originals other than the reflective coating? If they are crappy some how can you describe the differences and what make them look so different? Right now, my plan is go with them since there really isn't much other options unless you have or can get an original black and yellow like off ebay for quite a bit of money.

Yes DLW, I saw them (maybe 15 months ago) and they looked too phoney all the way around, if you want a set of real plates, I would recommend attending auto swapmeets, (not EBAY) there are plenty of meets up here and I find them all the time sometimes for as cheap $40.00 for a cleared set and I never pay more than $75.00, but look in all the boxes, whatever your decision is good luck.

Alright, thanks for the insight C/10 King...Will keep a look out for some cleared original plates to use in that case.

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

what would be the difference between the regular plate and the new yellow/black plate? should be stamped the same with the different color. their just like a personalized plate as you pick your letters and numbers. anything would be better than the plates we have now.

yes you can go the other way also. YFM
