Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Well, sometimes things happen that just blow your mind! Just got off the phone with the machine shop that i will be dropping my block off on friday. He is going to test the block, the pistons and the cam and let me know..
Then he tells me that he has a COMPLETE 307 with everything setting there that he will GIVE me, and even load it in my truck for me!. It was dropped off by a forum member here who was building a new motor to put in his truck... This is the best news i can think of. Now I can actually build a full 307 from top to bottom, and it literally cut my expenses in over half!!! I dont know the shape that the complete 307 is in, but he said it comes with manifold and heads etc..... I will at least be able to use A LOT of it for parts. And i will be able to learn so much as i tear it down. Wont mention the forum members name unless he wants me to. But I am giving a BIG thank you to him and Geoff at Jackson Head Service!!!!!! |

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Nice!
I scored a 307 with only 10k (.020) on it for $25 because the guy HAD to have a 350. He had the factory heads on it (993?) and he thought it should have more performance. I let him know about the 305 heads, but he went with his 350.

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Yeah, i dont blame anyone for changing to a differant motor. And as we see, the 307 isnt exactly the most popular motor out there. Not a lot of people looking for them or caring about them!
When im done with this it looks like i will have 2 extra 307 blocks!!! |

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Well, spent today cleaning up and tearing down the old motor. Got it all torn down. Sending the crank to the shop monday to get checked out.
After i got that done, I decided i wanted to confirm the heads that were in my truck. Was told 416 heads.... Well, they arent........ They are 378450 heads. Very little information out there about these heads at all, but from what i can find it seems they are 60CC with 1.72/1.50 valves......So not what i was wanting AT ALL!. I started this 307 build using the 416 heads, Elderbrock 2101 intake, Elderbrock 1400, 600cfm carb, and HEI super coil as my starting point as I was told they were just installed fresh when I got the truck in June....Well the carb, manifold and HEI are right..just not the heads.... First i guess i should ask if anyone has any info on these heads? Worth keeping or???? I guess i could try and sell the intake and heads and get a new intake manifold and some vortec heads if i can find them reasonably priced...... |

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Those are really small valves... and a very small combustion chamber. I bet they are 262 or 305 heads.
There are way better heads available for that ol' 307. Gary

Around $400 bucks bare, and a little over $500 assembled... each.

If I have to ask what it costs, I probably cant afford it....that said, the bank has far more money than I do(and they are willing to share)

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
We built a 307 with a set of vette 69cc chamber heads with some mild porting and port matching to the intake with a 268 Comp cam and a 650 Edl carb and mudrace it in a 3/4 ton 86 Gm truck and it kicks a lot of trucks and raises a few eyebrows when we say ya only a 307, pretty sure they think we are lying. Works great though.

Are you lookin' for the 305 "416" heads? I might have missed that.

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
I am not looking for the 416 heads really, i know they have 1.84 valves which are better than what i have. I thought the 416s were what i had. I will go with whatever is best while staying in a reasonable budget!

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
There are a lot of used stock 1.94 closed chamber heads out there. Which you can prolly find for cheap and they will work great.
Wait a minute... I got a buddy with some 1.94's that he is getting rid of since he put Iron Eagles on his '72 Monte. They were stock 1.94's that might have an open chamber around 75cc's. Last I talked to him about them, he still has them and will sell them CHEAP. They aren't the 64cc's you're after... but they are a decent set of rebuilt stock heads that have maybe 2,500 miles on them. If that many... Gary

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Figure i would post up pics of my progress this weekend. Took the old block apart, pulled the crank, hopefully the journals can be grinded down.....
As for heads....well i am not in rush so i will keep my eyes open and see what shows up.....Thankfully i can be patient with this. Hopefully means i can find a good deal..... I decided as long as the crank, block and cam are ok to use, i am still going to go through with the 307.....I know i have a good intake and carb...so lets just find some good heads!! |

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Been shopping ebay religiously. Looks like i might go with Vortec heads. The machine shop i took it to told me that he has a set laying on the shelf. He is going to have to put around 150 in them to get them ready, but will let me have them for 450 or 5 depending on how much he puts into them.
His rough estimate today was that with the 270H, some other small tweaks, that with the Vortec heads and intake he should be able to get the motor close to 350HP..... He will even Dyno it at build end. I plan on doing as much of it as I can, but i trust this guy and if the money is right i might just have him do most of it.... We will see what a good mechanic/machinest can do with a budget 307.... |

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
i think both would work.
There pretty much the same.. Id look around for a used one first post a WTB add You just need the intake with the mounting bolts that are vertical NOT diagonal

Re: Made an "un-popular" decision with my 307!
Ask your machinist....he will likely know what that Summit intake is.....my .02 , I would spend the extra 50 bucks on the Edelbrock, vs a "float over on the boat knockoff"....crazyL
