I know this thread is old but if your still around and can remember, what did you use to mount the rear ac unit to the roof of the burb? I'm getting ready to order one and this info would help a bunch!

To bring this back from The dead. Do you guys who have installed this unit think it can be retro fitted into the stock overhead ac. I have the unit that runs front to back. And would love heat for rear

I don't have the answer but reading through this thread is SURE making me miss my ol' Burb.

Hi Jeff. Do you have any pictures of the second row seat how it is mounted? I tested fitted my seats from a 04 Suburban and they seem very close together.

The 2nd row was tight, but my kids were small. The only time it mattered was the few weeks after I first installed the front seats. The power wasn't hooked up yet, so it was super tight. I always figured I could notch the rear seat bracket to allow it to ride up on the rear floor if I were ever to redo it.

I have been trying to get my '72 Suburban original-ish front and rear A/C working with some success. I live in Florida, so I have some minor complaints from the family on the cooling power, especially in city driving. It gets hot here!! The A/C didn't work when I purchased the vehicle about a year ago due to compressor bearing failures. After a little research, I purchased a Four Seasons 58098 AC compressor, with clutch.

It worked ok for a while (about 6 months), but died on me last week. The clutch started spewing black super-heated liquid all over the engine bay. AutoZone - where I purchased it - gave me a free replacement that I installed this week, so I'm back in business.

One question for this group of folks - does anyone have a perspective on replacing the front fan for the A/C system? Is it very involved? Only the LOW and MED speeds now work, and the fan speed was anemic even when the HIGH speed worked. While I have plenty of cold air available, the fan just won't push it to the 2nd row of seats.

Here's another question, does the newer model Gen IV system do any better at cooling one of these big beasts than the Gen II on the original post?

If I am not mistaken, the Gen II uses the old style pulleys and cables and the newer version uses electronic solenoids. I believe the cooling capabilities are similar. I had the old style and it cooled fine. I did add the rear air in addition to the traditional system.

I have had both, and now have a VA monster unit. Light years ahead of the direct fit. A monster unit will heat and cool the whole car, but it uses bigger hoses in the front that uses more of the valuable room there. I never had any luck getting the stock rear unit to work properly.Direct fit is just not big enough for these big cars.

So did you use one of VA kits and upgrade blower to larger unit or piece the kit together? I'm doing a large swap this winter and wife wants ac so now is the time

To my knowledge VA doesn't make a direct fit with the Monster unit, but everything looks the same except the dash unit. They do make a bigger compressor than the direct fits use, and I would recommend that. VA are very knowledgeable about swaps and are more than qualified to help.

The monster unit evaporater fits behind the dash, but had to put the vents under the dash. No room for in dash vents

Has anyone mounted one of the skin units above the second row seat? I don't have 3rd row seat I'm worried the second row seat won't get cold enough. I have 5 year old that sits there and as it is the front barely gets cold enough in 95 degree temps
