Re: got the 72 longhorn home
The front of the toolbox side doesn't look to bad , can it be added to a regular longbed?
Aren't they just bolted together? Never looked at one that close. |

Removing the front sections was my 1st thought but I have yet to see how they are attached. I assume they are spotwelded but have not really gotten under the truck yet to look at the inside of the panels.

Re: got the 72 longhorn home
Well I have decided that the truck is just to far gone for me to work with. I have way to much going on at work and with other projects to attempt putting it back together. I have started disassembling the truck. Gonna clean everything up Paint it, label it then decide if it will be shelved or sold.

Though I hate to hear of yet another 'horn going to the "great garage in the sky", I guess the value of mine just took another step up the pole .......
I am going to have to compare your spid with mine though, Richard. Im curious as to what kept that one from being a "super". |

Richard, Don't forget me now. Is this really going to be a part out or will you try to find another home for it?

the bed has been the hardest part of all. I have found a couple about 8 hours away and I have found a complete GMC about 2 hours away. I really hate to part up the GMC (it is for sale here in the truck section) it looks in too nice of shape. I am not sure exactly what happened with this truck in the past few years, at first I thought every pc. of sheetmetal was rotten ( and I bought it knowing that) but when I got it home, upon further inspection, I found that the only thing ruted on the actual cab was the outer rockers. All the supports, innner rockers and floorpans looked good. The fenders, door, hood and back bed are rotten. I was expecting to see the front firewall and Apillar rotten as well but I got the doors and front clip off of it earlier this week and they are for the most part solid. The radiator support was toast though. the really strange thing I noticed after getting the front clip off was the fact that the power steering box was hardly visable from the top. The top of the frame rail, top of the steering box and everything in that area was packed full of sand. It was over an inch deep. The insides of the fenders also had a lot of sand. I almost feel like the truck might have been swamped or in a flood at some point. Up until this point I had not checked the motor so I did not know if it runs or was locked up so I figured I might as well check to see if it would turn over. I pulled the oil stick and it is good and used but no sign of water. I put my 3/8 ratchet on it and it turns over pretty easy so I have my fingers crossed at this point nothing is wrong with the engine. The truck has been repainted at some point in its life. The other thing that makes me think the truck may have been submerged is the fact that behind all of the mouldings upper and lower they were packed full of dirt. The only other thing I can come up with is it may have set alongside a farm field for the last nine years with the dirt blowing on it and settling. I guess my plan for now is get rid of all the rotten parts in the metal dumpster (done) dissasemble the rest of the truck of all the good useable parts, clean them up, test them, paint them where needed, and shelve them. I am going to keep the cab and frame covered up outside for now and intend to keep all the identifying aspects of the spid in case at some point in the future I find the parts I need. I do plan to attempt getting the motor running before I pull it. Sorry to be longwinded ( without pics no less) Richard

Re: got the 72 longhorn home
Pretty old thread but still have the longhorn covered up, hoping to find good parts I can afford one day to put it back together. I had another one (in worse shape) follow me home yesterday. Lots of usable parts though and still has the original am/fm . Truck is 350 engine and the guy is telling me its a TH400. Still gotta crawl under to verify. Engine is supposed to run pretty good so once I get it tested out and verify it is all good I will swap it into my 72 Blazer in place of the old tired 307. This one had a camper top that looks like it was there all its life so I went with the hope that the bed was still good, sadly it is not ( worse than the one I have) but most of the bed wood is still good and the aux. tank still looks good. Here are the only two pics so far but will post more when I start pulling apart. One of the pics is the Spid for SS Tim to add to the collection. Is there a Spid thread for just longhorns? I searched a little but did not see one.

Re: got the 72 longhorn home
This truck i just picked up has me scratching my head again. I was under the impression that the 3/4 ton trucks had Dana rears and the 30's has Eatons, this truck has the eaton? This truck "appears" to still be original paint and it has "30" badges on the fenders, but if you decode the vin it comes up as a "20".

Re: got the 72 longhorn home
Nice bunch of trucks you're finding. I always thought the C-30 trucks had the HO-72 and 3/4 ton trucks had the HO-52 rear ends.
I also see the new orange one has the parchment interior with black belts. |

Re: got the 72 longhorn home
Any of these Longhorn 400s have a valve cover decal remaining at all? I'm still thinking there's one specific to the Longhorns 400s, not used on anything else. My truck had one but it's not reproduced. It's an ongoing mystery, so any new Longhorns with 402, I ask...
