Re: New here and new to older trucks..

heres a picture of my blue cab with lots of blue interior

and here are the only pics i got of the bed cross sills. they line up with the holes in the outside strip of metal down both sides.if you havent got that bit of metal you may be able to work out where the small one goes in relation to the angled chassis crossmember.basically it slides up the chassis curve from the rear untill its in line with the top of the other sills.

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Rear fender are done patching up, this was my last patch of the day (and hope the whole truck) although we are trying to remove the front fender in order to fit the door and it does not look promising, should have done a shop truck and leave it at that..

Man!!!!! The steering wheel reeks like puke...!!! Are they all like that or is it the rust-oleum???
Fixed with NuMetal putty and finally got rid of the white rust oleum...

Getting ready to re-schedule painting, prep should be done tomorrow, door fitted ( fingers crossed)
Gotta work with the cross sills and bed..get wheels ready for paint.

White or chrome bumpers???

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Well, we are still working on patching sheetmetal (actually, patching a combo of rust, fiberglass and bondo)
Gotta give props to Fernan for taking the time to save what was left..under 3 different coats of paint/primer..

Lets see what we accomplish tomorrow..

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Fender transformed

Finally, tape is off..

Now is the tedious re-assembly and then a good polish.
Paint the wheels and get some new tires, get the lowered springs..

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

A bit blurry pic of the passengers side

Stuff for the inside ( thanks to the painter for not covering the table...duhh)

My donor truck has a chrome moulding on the back of the cab ( division) with clips and all, but most of the trucks Ive seen do not, was it a special feature or people tend to get rid of the trim and clips???

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Since I dont have the strips for the wood slats and I will be using it for cargo, drill holes for the motorcycle chocks, etc, Ive decided to use a plywood panel for bed floor in the meantime.

Can I place the plywood atop the angle strips or should I place it underneath?

By the photos above by SharpMark, the boards are sandwiched between the sides and cross sills..

My guess is I will be putting the bed together first and then bother about a floor, since I still want to deal with the exhaust, shocks and springs, but I want the bed placed so its not laying around, and to final buff it

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

i put a board down each side and then used a sheet of ply-reason being bed is too wide for a single sheet of ply.

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Today we primed the wheels and stop/reverse light brackets, also changed the rear shocks, the PO privided a new set of Monroes. Need the rear lowered springs before putting the bed on, although I dont think I'll get them before that.

Have not decided on tires, Im leaning for wide white walls, although the more modern narrow white stripes are wayyy cheaper..

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Some more done today, slowly but surely...

Tomorrow we bolt the bed and spray the wheels...

Since wheels are off, and we needed to replace the shocks anyway ( and I have another set of stock springs).....

The spring was rusty at the base..so a whole coil goes, 2" drop

Now I need a pair of rear 4" ones!!!!!!

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Thanks.. I did saw (read) your thread..its not about the color, but the way it was done..
I wanted to keep it yellow but flatten it out..and add the white top and flatten that out too..
But it was too much.. The PO went overboard, and more so with white rust oleum all over the cab...
Your truck looks cool..and you toned it done with the white..
The PO on my truck had a white rust oleum and yellow orgy...!!!!!

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

O.G. Spare tire with painted wheel, been kind of a hassle finding white wall stripe tires in 16" that are not 60 series.

the fenders "after"

Was tempted to patch the marker lights and leave the fender smooth..they are in bad shape, but will do.

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

making your own white wall is what i had to do, a big grinder and a real rough wheel like sand paper is the trick....a regular grinding wheel don't work very good.....

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Theres a hard brush wire we use to remove paint and rust which works, but then it will need a few passes with something softer like you say.

Although, found a set of 6.50-16 2 3/4" white walls, brand new, in stock local..with my discount the price aint that bad..
Question is, 6.50 is too narrow??? Or works fine??

Re: New here and new to older trucks..

Another day, another dollar (spent)
Heres how we started the day

Beds up, setting those bolts and cross sills down

Getting there..

All the guys left, so I kinda manhandled the fenders in place
Wheels are ready, waiting for some $$$ for the tires
Would the truck look crappy with 6.50 x 16, will it ride ok???

Lets call it a day..
