Re: 5.3 swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

It's been kinda cold lately though

Did the grinding on the firewall tonight. I also built the most bobo bodywork "booth" in my garage using 1" pvc. This looks horrendous right now, but hopefully will be pretty soon!

This will be my first time doing bodywork. The plan is to do the bodywork and priming in the bobo booth and then take it to a neighbor's collision shop to do the real painting.

Hey nothing wrong with doing bodywork or painting in a home built booth. I have don't myself with good results BOOTH. Just be sure to use good materials and ask lots of questions if you're not sure.

Wow, that's one of my dream cars, and hopefully my next project. Any pics of the engine?

Glad I could be a bad influence! Go get after it!

That turned out great actually! What'd you use for primer/paint etc?

I looked into southern polyurethanes, and I think I'll be putting an order in this week for some material.

I used a PPG base/clear If you want a perfect color use a single stage. It wont hold up very long here in Florida........I live in Vero beach

What color is that?? Is it seafoam green or Daphne blue? God that's beautiful.

That Camaro is nuts, and you're a bad influence making me want to build one of those.

I can just feel my wallet lightening.

Do you ever go to the Daytona rod runs?

Here is the wagon.....The 6 cyl was making 1400 HP but it was real fast accelerating because it was a 4 valve and would rev to 10,000 quite easy. I had to be careful with it as the shift points even on the street were 9500 rpm.....no pushrods and no lift.......I used a motorcycle valve spring...This engine would out accelerate my V8 to 60 MPH......about 2 seconds even on the street. V8 was closer to 3 seconds to 60 mph.

Thanks, yeah it still looks great 3 years later, daily driven too. I went way cheap on that truck (unlike my current build). I used Nason high build urethane primer and single stage Nason urethane top coat. I only spent like $300 for primer and paint. I think it's best to use an epoxy primer then high build then sealer then paint. I only painted the jambs and exterior so it only took a gallon of primer and paint. I bought it all at my local Oreilly's so it was convenient.
Since you'll probably be doing all your panels inside and out it will take much more material. I have already used over 4 gallons of material on my current project but every surface is coated with epoxy and most with high build. I also bought 2 gallons of base and 3.5 gallons of clear. It's easy to spend over a budget if you're not careful.
It really depends on what you want as your finished paint job. You can get a nice driver quality paint job relatively cheap.
I have also read good things about SPI. They have good prices on epoxy primer.

Re: 5.3 swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

Fuel cell went in the other day, and am still working on finishing the frame up. Got finished building the bobo booth, and got the primer ordered. Also finished up the sheet metal order tonight.

Got a lot of the cab gutted, and need to clean the rest, then start more dirty work. Got a shop lined up to do the paint. Looking into the turbo setup this week. The next few weeks are going to let me know if I can finish this thing by the end of March for the Daytona rod run.

Re: 5.3 swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

Well, haven't updated in a while. Ended up tearing my shoulder, just as all these goodies arrived! Due to get a cortisone shot next week. Hopefully that'll last me through the bodywork can do the rest one handed!

Anyway, the turbo, most of the piping, the fuel setup, primers, body parts, high hump. Still waiting on the cam, the rest of the piping, the intercooler, and headers need to get here. The turbo is a GT45 ebay special that everyone keeps giving high marks to. I'll take it apart tomorrow to make sure it's all clean. Either way, it beats the heck out of the old turbo I had that was smaller, and gouged inside. Expect to run about 10 psi, and 500+whp. Not big on numbers, but that's what it'll end up around. Wanted the high hump because I will be needing a 4l80 sooner than later.

And yes, that's an entire room of my house dedicated to truck parts. I'm lucky in the way that's it's just me and the dog, and he doesn't do any *****ing

Re: 5.3 swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

More goodies came in today!

Cam, springs, pushrods, retainers, etc.

Also did a little work on a fender to see how it would go. The best combination seemed to be an angle grinder with a wire wheel to strip the paint, followed by a DA with 80 grit to clean/scratch it for primer. I'm still going to get the cab and bed blasted, because they're just way too much surface area. The left side in the picture is after the DA, the right side is just the wire wheel.

Re: 5.3 swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

Long day today, but some good results. Got all the hot side piping done except for the downpipe. The piping was from a Lincoln Mark 8 exhaust kit. Still need to clean some things up, but the dimensions are there at least.

Also, I've been stripping the paint using a heat gun and razor scraper. Works really well. Should take way less time to sand the rest.

I was thinking about using the heat gun method, but I was worried it would warp the panels. Do you think it's safe?? Nice work on the exhaust, BTW.

Re: 5.3 Turbo swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

I wouldn't leave it on there until the paint bubbles, but I don't think it'll do much to thicker gauge original steel unless you really roast it. In my case I had 6 layers of paint and primer, so it was a little thicker than normal. replace the razor blade often and it comes off effortlessly.

I really don't like the pipe coming from drivers side of the flex pipe, so I'm going to change it this week. Also need to mount the wastegate at a little smoother of an angle.

Congrats on the turbo acquisition! Looks like you are knocking out the plumbing. Looks good. How much did the kit set you back if you don't mind? I'd like to add one to my little 4.8.

Re: 5.3 Turbo swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

I bought the kit from this guy, and cut up the pieces I needed. My suggestion is to go get a chop saw, because a sawzall and angle grinder is not the best route for cutting The other boneheads I ordered the 3" u-bends for the cold side piping sent me the wrong size pipe, so I have to wait on that.

Everything on the hot side is getting wrapped, so it doesn't need to be gorgeous, but I do need to fix that one pipe next to the flex and then grind the welds smooth. The cold side piping will be tig welded because they do need to be pretty.

Re: 5.3 Turbo swap 68 Stepside C10-Project Sky Dogggg maannnnn

Well I didn't like the way the manifolds ended up, so I re-did them. Much better this time around. Now just need to clean up the welds and wrap them. I have really been slacking ass lately, I need to step it up!

Also got the cam and the valve springs done. Took about 5 hours. Man, someone needs to invent a faster spring tool!
