values of 67-72's deja vu

I have looked at several trucks this year for parts to keep or for resale. More often than not Ive walked off not even making an offer. When Im standing there looking at an $800. rust bucket and they very proudly tell me that they saw one of these on barrett-jackson sell for $25000. I just want to be really critical about their eye sight and tell them what I think of their barrett jackson value. Instead, I usually just turn around and leave telling them its not what Im looking for. Too many people spend too much time watching auto reality shows!! If Ive heard it once Ive heard it a hundred times-- "all it needs is just " little fixin" and itll be worth a fortune".

Once I just couldnt stand it and as I was leaving I told the owner----"you do the fixen then and see what the hell its worth afterward". We undoubtedly live in a time when we have more research resources available to us than any other time in history----but a lot of people seem to have lost all touch with Reality than ever before.
I may be giving away my age, but I remember a time when an old junk car was Just that--a junk car, and every one knew it. Now---it just needs "a little fixen"!!

To me a little fixin' means points, plugs, rotor and condenser.

Actual restorations take $50K if you're doing all the work yourself and $250K if you're paying someone else to do it.

I think neither one of you have done much for good restorations. he'll a quality paint and body job can run you $10,000++ by itself.

A motor with new accessories can get you to the 7-8k mark too

Grumpy nailed it right here. I started buying '70's Trans Ams about fifteen years ago when you could drive one home for $2500, I bought every one that I could find for sale anywhere near me. In the end, I restored and sold about 20 of 'em over the years (along with a few Z/28's) anywhere from $5k to waaay up from there. The market on those has gone crazy now, even featured on Fast N Loud, etc.. I've made enough money to keep and fix 3 really good ones. Picked up a couple C/10's along the way too. There's a lot of these trucks around here in farm country that can still be bought, so here I go on those..Cash is KING!

Not to try and start an argument here or anything like that, but it cost a fraction of that to buy you own paint and materials.

If it's costing you $10k+ to paint your own car, or $7k to build your own stock engine you're doing something very wrong, ESPECIALLY since we're only talking restoration here.

Boy Special K sure makes a lot of good points, I hope I can express what I mean with what I'm about to say, first off if theirs a market for it there stamping out new cabs and bodies for other models so I'm looking to see that soon for a 67 - 72 but I've always admired a T or an A model, be it a stock example or a rod of some kind and I have a friend who keeps trying to swap me one for my Chevy ll, tried to offer a build last weekend as his wife just loves my car and wants it to take the whole family cruzing in.
As tempted as I am I just can't do it, I remember these old mussel cars from a period in my life and the lives of people who mean something to me, I don't remember the old A models. They have a great place in history but I don't share it, a lesser vehicle is worth more to me, and I'm the one spending the money, with that said IMO as the people who were there pass on theirs no emotional attachment connected to the era people will pay less and less as a pop thing, theirs always going to be someone like say Jay Leno who can afford anything and has the taste for that and will keep things going. I think these old trucks are worth about as much as there going to be right now or will soon top out.
I'm in my mid 50s my first new truck was a 78 and there popular, my dad had one of these along with uncles and friends from school, in 20 or 30 years I'll probably be gone and no one will love this truck like I do it will be a curiosity, the popular trucks will have been built in the 90s and early 2000s then. Look at todays prices I really don't think these old beauties are gold mines but they are popular, sooner or later someone will restamp the cabs and then who will wont to pay top dollar for a rusty cab.

Well thanks for that. My paint and body was closer to $30K, and it was rust-free. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want you to touch my truck or build my engine, because not to be rude, but it doesn't sound like you'd be able to perceive the difference.

Do the math. A typical Barrett-Jackson restoration "frame off" takes about 1000 hours. My last full restoration was 2000 hours. A Pebble Beach restoration can be 5000 hours. Multiply 2000 hours by your favorite $75 per hour shop rate, and you're at $150K plus parts and supplies.

Of course I'm talking about dropping it off and picking it up 18 months later.

Since these trucks top out at about $35K value, I opted do it everything but paint myself. So read it and weep: below you'll see close to $25K in parts and engine/trans/rear, plus $30K paint, and you're over $55K doing most of the work yourself.

I don't want a rat-rod, but to each their own.

I agree Grumpy, who want's a repop! And I still find it hard to accept that it takes $30,000 to get a great paint job. I believe an average person could be taught to shoot paint that would look like $30000! and their tuition would be far less then $30K.

WOW ! Sorry to say but if you put that much money into a restoration of a 1970 GMC pick up truck You Have something that only you will enjoy for whatever reason ? Those look like full retail + for every single part and anyone really building a complete project buying that amount of parts or spending that amount on a rebuild would have a wholesale account and a tax number , And before you start dissing other people and their projects you may want to check yourself because your wallet won't cover what your dishing out ! P.S. I'll put my "RAT ROD PROJECT" next to yours any day of the week !
