Re: gm crate engine question

Does anybody know if the Vortec crate engine warranty is valid in our trucks?

That's actually a really good question... they are listed by GM with a "year range." It may fall under the "Non cataloged passenger car & light duty truck". It would still have a warranty, but only for 12 mo/12K miles instead of the 3yr/100K warranty?

However, if you make friends with your dealer, that year range might not be an issue, especially if it's dealer installed?

From what I understand of the loss of zinc in our oils, is that it effects the older flat tappet motors, as in our old Allis Chalmers tractors. It is eating up the cam shafts. Where you have a rotating lifter you have no problem.

Radley Chevrolet is the seller on Amazon, but they are cheaper on their eBay auction. (By a few bucks only)
I called them directly and ordered it for the ebay price, and also got the damper and bolt for just a little more, they are great to deal with....I'm not afraid of a flat tappet cam, have never had a cam go bad on me, and have had to break in rebuilt engines before and have owned the same trucks for over 30 years.I do run a good grade of oil all the time...my 72 is fairly new to me, 17 years,ha ha, I put an old 350 in it I got from a friend, has alot of miles on it and some lifter noise, but runs good came out of a 75 pickup, I just want a fresh engine in there before I get it painted,so don't have to worry about screwing up the paint changing the engine later....and the warranty is good when installing it yourself....

Stepping up to a 4 bolt would only be worth it (and marginally), if you were putting high HP and running high RPM's regularly.
If that was even remotely true.. g.m. would've never built a 4 bolt vortec for the 3/4 ton and up trucks..
They all be 2 bolts..
No way they spend the machining cost and extra parts.. if not needed.. bean counters would see to it.

I'd not worry about it.. we have 25 installed in trucks and most have north of 100k on them now.. Tho not in these year trucks.. they had no problems.. and never needed the warranty...
My vortec for my c-10 is still on the stand..
but it's warranty was void as soon as I put the ramjet cam in it

Send them a note on ebay. I went through the same thing with Holley on an intake sale. I got a great deal then they jacked up the price. I sent them a note and told them that I had been talking about their great deal on this forum and they dropped it back down for a few more days. Couldn't hurt to ask.

LOL! I actually called them today. The guy that answered the phone couldn't cut the deal for me, but he gave me the name of someone who would be in on Monday that may be able to take care of it and offer the special price.

I'll keep you posted!

Did your engine arrive yet?

Re: gm crate engine question

I have a quick question about these 195hp crate engines before I pull the trigger.

Does anybody know if they come with the holes drilled and tapped for the power steering pump, the clutch pedal rockshaft, and the oil pressure gauge?

Here are some photos of what I'm talking about. This is where the power steering pump holes would be: (This particular block is not drilled and tapped)

Here are the clutch bolts: (Just above the oil filter)

And here is the oil pressure port:

Re: gm crate engine question

Thanks so much for the pics Redneck!

Update.....................

I called Radley today about the price on this (195hp) engine. After getting transferred to about 4 different people, I finally spoke with their "engine guy". He was able to hook me up with the previous sale price! ($1352.99 + free shipping) I don't remember the guy's name, but if you call them looking for this good price, ask for "Pracillia" and give her a sob story about how you were going to buy one of these last week, but missed out on the old price and you were hoping they would honor that previous price. Whoever she transferred me to ended up sending an email invoice that was able to be paid with the choice of either PayPal or credit card.

THE TRIGGER HAS BEEN PULLED!!!!

No problem. I just put it on the stand last week so it was "right there."

I think you'll be happy with it.

I plan to clean mine up a little and respray it again and start putting it together.

I think you mean rolling lifter - all lifters rotate (until they fail and stop!) in their bores, that's why the lobe is off-center when you look in the lifter bore.

Congrats Eldo! Tracking shows that mine should be here in a day or two. Did yours come with any literature regarding warranty or install/break-in instructions?

Re: gm crate engine question

Great thread. Getting ready to purchase one for my Blazer. The original engine has well over

100,000 miles and the bottom end just started making noise. The 195 looks like a great replacement engine. Original owner used the Blazer to push snow on his driveway in Gunnison Colorado. Engine is tried and the bottom end just started making noise. I don't need a powerhouse. Just a cruiser.

hi guys, I bought the 10067353 in 99 and have a e-brock performer,q-jet and headers. I put the 204-214 @050 420-442 cam in it. it now has 89,000 on it and runs great. no problems. also, chevy high performance mag, did a series of articles on this engine and they found it was 8.0 comp stock. it has hauled my 4500# truck around for many years, I feel I got my moneys worth. and its still running really strong.
