I use this to tow my 6,000lbs race car and trailer to brainerd and back (300 mile round trip). I can run 60-65 and get 7 mpg. 9 mpg without the trailer.

I got this from the man that ordered the truck and then drove it straight to Caveman factory and had them make their first motor home. It's all original and ready for the right person to love! The original 327 runs great and it drives like new!

Surprisingly, once my wife saw this in person I think she wanted it more than I did. When we didn't get it the first time we saw it, I caught her searching craigslist for another one! We've got 6 camping trips in it so far. Averaged 11 mpg over Mt. Hood to eastern Oregon for a raft trip.

That is SUPER, I say SUPER. 11 MPG is pretty great. I'd have expected 7-8. Quite a few of these posted are "desirable".

Awesome thread OP. I have visions of selling my travel trailer and getting one of these. In hindsight, it would have been cheaper and more better.

Hello, I love this forum and especially this thread!! Such great rigs out there, very inspiring.
My '68 Open Road just rolled off the trailer from Boise last night. I stayed up all night checking it out... it's a project for sure. It runs like a dream (kind of exhausty).
I'm sure it needs a tune up and fresh gas? I thinks it's been sitting since 2002.
I had a carb rebuild and brakes fixed out in Boise... initially thought I would fly out and drive it home, but transport was cheaper, and safer... I got a great deal.

Surprised to see no "Park" on the column but a giant hand brake to keep it put... that'll take a second to get used to.

It has plenty of dust if anybody needs some.

Since we'd live in the motorhome about 2-3 weeks with our kids (4-year-old son and 3-month-old daughter), it can't be just any camper (project). I'm looking for a '71-72, so that particular one's not quite in my scope.

One major issue is the fact that we must fly over at a pretty short notice. Plus all the registration formalities and possibly required repairs for a longer camper trip. Since we don't know where and when we'll find the one for us, it makes planning a bit challenging.

But hey, I'm optimistic, it'll sort out somehow sooner or later.

If you do this
Fall or spring is the best time of year
Weather is best in most of the USA at those times
And school is in.
So the crowds are not quite as heavy
As summer time. When kids are on break.
And everyone is family vacationing.

That one's only about 30 miles from me. I like the way the doors and rockers look. I don't like the broken window over the cab ,though. Still he's cheap enough. Have not looked at it in person.

Just picked this up last week, It will be a lot of work but it will be ready to do some camping this summer. 1968 chevy Caveman camper motorhome, 52,000 original miles, inside cab is very nice. Inside camper needs some work. Question for anyone do you guys know what the weight is on these rigs, and a good solution for the gearing, this has 327 4 speed manual. should I do overdrive or is changing the gears enough?[ATTACH][ATTACH][/ATTACH][/ATTACH]

Wow...that looks like a fun, interesting find.
If that's on a 1 ton chassis it probably has a 4:10 gear or maybe a 4:56 gear in the back....some of the other guys can weigh in.
As for the camper part, like a lot of older campers they often suffer from leaks in the roof...but they are repairable.
I've restored a couple of older campers/trailers and there are some really neat things you can do to fix them up and personalize them for great camping.
As for the roof...definitely work to repair it and reseal it then, what I do is every year I clean and 'paint' it with the rubberized roof RV paint which keeps it dry.
The other big thing is the appliances.
There is a good chance the fridge no longer works...so keep an eye out for someone dismantling a more modern camper or trailer and try to get the fridge out of one those...ideally 12Volt/120volt...and definitely working on propane.
We have an older 14' trailer which I fixed up....added more and better lights, accessories, cool vintage detail parts,....lots of fun stuff.
The great news is that......you only really have one (small) room to renovate instead of a whole house, lol.

It appears your are near Seattle. Inspect for water damage. Older RVs with aluminum siding are notorious for having water damage. Especially in your climate.

Look for any wood soft spots near windows, walls and flooring. Pay close attention to the aluminum seams.

Pay close attention to the roof and recaulk the roof seams and all roof vents.

With that said, have a great time Rving and traveling!

I think you should try it out with those gears and see if it might be an advantage to have low gearing when you are going up 410 to the Chinook pass or some other high altitude route.
One shouldn't be drive 75 in one of those. Just the gas consideration alone would warrant a speed of 55-60 IMO (not to mention the local speed laws).
Check those drum brakes out real well. I bought my current truck with a massive cab-over and rear overhanging camper. The first thing I did was put a new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders (or I "rebuilt" them, I can't remember), drums and shoes with new hardware. Also the old tires had plenty of tread but it was easy to see the deep cracking on each one. I had to replace them all.
