Power or no power steering

I have a thread in the suspension area. I've always wondered why you can't put the inside of car manual 16:1 ratio into the truck with 24:1 ratio. The casting looks the same on both except the mount flange is on opposite sides.

Heck yeah, 16:1 is better than 24:1, right?

I have often thought about buying one to see. My truck has power assist so it would be nice to have 4 turns instead of 6. But that's a $350 gamble. Would be nice to know if someone has swapped car and truck box parts before.

I emailed borgeson on the weekend and tjey told me as long as I have an oe box I can interchange with their 16:1 parts from their box.

I'm for no power steering and, no tilt for that matter because, those are things that used to be commonplace to see a truck with no tilt or power steering. When you're going fast enough you don't need power steering. I didn't buy (Zooey) my C/10 just for her looks.

I've heard ram assist seals would leak. I'm guessing that's why you got if of it or are there other reasons that I should be aware of to avoid it too?

I like the power steering on all my vehicles. With that said I have a complete power assist unit out of my 64 SS Impala. I took it out because when I bought the car PO had cut the belt off of it, it was leaking so bad. I put a regular PS box on it. I have the whole unit still.
One day I will rebuild it and get it working again.

As far as a 67 trucks go they all had the PS assist on them. They didn't put boxes on until late 68 and early 69 models. Most all your big cars before 67/68 had the PS assist also even the Corvette. The assist was a good unit up until it starts leaking. There are so many moving parts with seal that once it starts it's just going to get worse.

My 2 cents and that's all its worth. Our '67 shop truck had @ 307 V8 manual steering and 3 on the tree. Loved it. Tires were good'ol tall skinnies and drove great. Wasn't difficult to maneuver at all. Today the '71 has power steering and it's nice...if you drive in a rural or semi-rural area where you don't do a lot of big parking lots or big city cruising, why mess with it? Driving situation and what you like/want makes the decision easy for whatever your circumstances are.
Some day wish list includes a bare bones manual everything with an I6 or small V8 just for old time fun.
