I am going to add in my opinion, but like belly buttons, everyone has one. Have you purchased that smaller box already, and are you committed to it? My personal take would be to have one custom folded, welded and then painted to match the arches. Possibly to take up more of the space across the rear. Make it s a "quick release" type of floor mount, make sure you can open it fully without making contact with the rear of the bed. Then tuck in the actual bin section toward the cab, to maximise the space, otherwise you end up with "dead space" where you compensate for the lid opening. I personally do not care for the diamond plate ally look. Rather flat steel or ally, folded and welded appropriately. Two locks like the example, for added security. I would also add in a cigarette lighter type power socket to the inside, in case you want to power something like a small cooler box in there..... OK, now I am going overboard. Anyway, personal opinion...... You have put so much into the truck that a custom designed safe box would make a lot of sense, and look great. Good luck figuring it all out.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks a lot Martin. I knew someone would put that idea out there. I looked for a steel box that I could paint gray to match but could not find one I liked. Not to sure if the paint will stick that well to tread plate aluminum.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks for looking in. I got the bed all bolted down, fuel door installed, fuel tank mounted back in and the rear wheels put on. I hope to take it and have the frontend aligned this week and finish the exhaust.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks DKO. Yes it is. I am about ready for a cruise maybe next week. Also decided to use this box for now as it was not to expensive.

Man I haven't checked your build in a while. It looks awesome. I love the way the paint brings it together.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks Eric. I got the bumper installed. Still need to fab some outer brackets. I modified the inside ones so the bumper would sit closer to the truck.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
truck looks beautiful Donny... I think the diamond plate accents the polished strips and looks good until you figure out a permanent solution. Did you secure it to the floor somehow, sure wouldn't want it moving around.
nice job, time to enjoy the fruits... |

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks guys for all the positive comments. And all the help that I have received on this forum. I can't tell you how many questions I have had answered on here that helped with my build. It is slowly coming to and end I am taking in in the morning for a frontend alignment and finish the exhaust. Then it will get a small road trip to see how everything works.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks Clem. And yes I just ran bolts thorough the bottom where some bolts held down the strips. And put rudder strips between box and stainless strips.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
I am going to paint the GMC letters and the border circle gray. Then the rest silver. I still have a lot to do on the gate. It had just been sand blasted so I need to weld up some holes and body work.

Re: Newbie with a 65 Chevy
Thanks Martin. It might not be the best body work and paint but like you said it is very satisfying knowing that I did it myself.

Not sure about you brother, but I am my own worst critic...
You are doing an amazing job and the Tailgate will be the icing on the cake...
