Re: 72 k20 project
for this engine it really wasnt necessary to improve the OEM manifold. this one is going to be somewhere in the 500hp range. so as opposed to create a huge can of worms trying to make a manifold(and believe me, i thought about it) it was more sensible to go with an OEM. since i cant leave anything alone, i had to cut it to fit my needs. the next engine will probably get a fabricated exhaust and intake. looking for 1k HP from that one, so a masterpiece will be better. also, in the name of tax deductions i am going to try to get myself a tig welder this year, and that will greatly assist in making a manifold.

Re: 72 k20 project
Thanks!
i melted the mounts together. these mounts are big and give me a solid landing pad for the turbo support and on the other side i need to fab a rear support for the hydraulic pump and air compressor. i also yanked all the stock lift pump and fuel filter off the engine. i'm going to have to start thinking about fuel filters and lift pump mounts soon and it was in the way anyhow. Nice work Ryan. Does that little heater on your bench work pretty good?

Re: 72 k20 project
the yellow one works fast, but doesnt cover much area... haha
usually what ill do with that is turn in on when i head to the gym. it cuts the chill down enough by the time i get back that i can usually be fine. i have a propane space heater that i run if it is real cold. as long as i am parking something in the garage that is warmed up when its parked, the garage space stays over 40 most of the winter. so as long as i can get it up to about 50 i can work comfortably |

Re: 72 k20 project
Thanks Buddy. it did come out well. i looked at the OEM oilpan after i pulled the trans. i may actually be able to make one work if i rework a pick up tube. i kind of want to have a BA aluminum pan, but i am considering taking the easy way and just cut and paste on a stocker. the trouble is, my pan is junk, so... i either buy a new one and chop it up, or buy some aluminum and sacrifice several extra hours of my life for the sake of wow factor.
anyhow, i got my engine stand finished up and pulled the engine. now the cleaning and tearing down starts and i will be ordering seal kits soon. |

Re: 72 k20 project
that was my first thought when i looked at it. "man, that doesnt look that big..." must be the pink, sucks the manly right out of everything. haha
this thing is solid as a rock. several times i leaned into a tight bolt and it never crossed my mind that i was working on a engine that was on a stand. not an experience i've had before... looks nice and clean up top KDP is in place and never been tabbed. lucky. definitely need a sleeve. need a bigger bag... |

Stay away from felpro head gaskets for these engines. They are junk. We've even had multiple failures of the blie felpro valve cover gaskets. We usually use genuine cummins parts because they are better in quality and we can get them locally. That bread truck didn't come from Lathrop did it?

Re: 72 k20 project
Ryan, that stand does make the engine look small. You did a great job on that stand. I'm jealous. Why bag your engine now? You've had the lower end open for a while. Haha I know where a stock pan is or even a little different more capacity pan is as well.

Re: 72 k20 project
so, i got the pump pulled. i cant stress how nice this stand is to work on. i didnt want it to pop off and land of the floor. Quick little spin of the handle and no more issue. no amount(as of yet) of my fiddling has mad it shake. i need to make some parking brakes, as it moves to easy, but that is a good thing.
these pumps are huge. |

Those pumps remind me of the old caterpillars, has a pony motor hanging off the side of the engine.

Re: 72 k20 project
They definitely are big. Ryan, you could make some steel wheel chocks to put around the wheels.
