Re: 72 k20 project
That looks like the engine out of Dawna's dragster. I bet flipping the engine over on that stand may require some assitance.

Re: 72 k20 project
I sure wouldnt mind having that engine! i do rather prefer my stand, pretty in pink, over a side mount though. I agree with Ryan too, flipping it is definately in need of a hoist. i think it probably stays upright at least dressed out like it is now. that has to be a cool shop to hang out in!
i look forward to having a nice pretty and fast engine on mine one day! i did use a 60:1 worm drive box. as for plans... i did i rough sketch on the computer, but i kind of freestyled it as i built. the finished product doesnt match my cad file almost at all. i do need to rework the drawing for the FEA so it is accurate |

Re: 72 k20 project
Ryan, Are you not running an A/C up there in the high desert? Or are you making another cool mount for it as well? Its been a bit since I've gone through your whole build thread, but I don't remember reading anything about it, and haven't seen a compressor in any of your recent mockup?

Re: 72 k20 project
Roger that. For some dumb reason i was thinking that was your air compressor, but it's way to small for that.

so, i got the engine pulled all the way down. now i need to start the cleaning. and the spending of money... haha. for what i need to spend just on replacement seals and gaskets, head studs and whatever else pops up, i think i could have built a decent small block... lots of parts come off this thing |

Re: 72 k20 project
its crazy what they wand for head studs, seems like there is some price gouging going on with those. it doesnt cost that much to heat treat and proof test bolts,. Due to preloading theyre still statically loaded and dont see fluctuating stresses so fatigue isnt an issue.

Re: 72 k20 project
so, outside of some clean up on the block and waiting on parts i haven't been doing a lot lately. last weekend i got bored and decided to paint some of the engine bolt ons a contrast color. i grabbed this stuff. its called Black Pearl. it almost has a dark brown look to it, but i am wondering if that isn't due to the grey primer under it? either way, i still like it
here is the gear housing case and cover. cover is the GM satin black engine paint that the block/head and various other parts will be wearing. a box of other parts. i also did some cheesy bodywork to the cold charge air pipe and painted it. i also took the time to clean the bejesus out of my garage. that was time well spent. so much nicer to be out there with it clean and less cluttered. then i started looking at the front fixed cross member. im still in the end stages of head scratching. this layout might get mirrored(the bent tube in the front pointed forward) for the final version, but i havent decided what i want for sure... trying to only build this one once! |

Re: 72 k20 project
Looks good. I agree with only wanting to do it once, because doing it once is expensive enough.

Re: 72 k20 project
well, i've done this whole truck at least twice i think! but i think i will get away with this one just once. the final design i decided on shouldn't be in the way of anything and i will still have space so i can mount anything that i may need to.

Re: 72 k20 project
Looking good! Do you have a winch going up in the front?

Re: 72 k20 project
Not planning for one right now. i am going to try to weasel a warn vr12000 i have up behind the rear bumper for loading trailers. right now i am leaning towards an OEM front bumper and no winch. i have been idly designing a front tube bumper in my head. if i end up going that route, i will build it to hold a winch. it makes more sense to put a winch on the front of the M715 than it does this truck though.

Re: 72 k20 project
Nice work on the clean up Ryan. Now it's deciding just how much money you want to spend.
