Re: 72 k20 project
yeah, but the front of these trucks are so clean with the OEM bumper. plus i can paint it white and fake the stock look. i have a line on a really clean vintage warn winch bumper that i could run on it if i wanted. but, i can make really cool looking tube set up too... just doesnt quite fit this truck in my head. if i get bored and decide to build the nerf bar things ive been thinking about i may do the tube bumper as well. then it will go together.
haha. may as well make sure its all gone when i'm done. i think ill probably go for the re-ring and toss some new bearings in it. at least then i dont have to think about it later. |

Re: 72 k20 project
I agree they do look really good with the stock front bumper and I've had the same thought for when I get to that point with my trucks but I think I want to build some for them. I'm thinking about something like this: http://pacificfabrication.com/67-72-...nt-bumper.html but with a full grille guard and maybe even get it chromed for a more oem look.

Re: 72 k20 project
i personally dont like chrome. not to mention a fabbed bumper out of plate steel will take a lot of effort to make look good chromed. lots of flat area will end up looking odd in chrome unless it is perfectly flat. and the joints would have to be meticulously finished or they will look bad in chrome.
those pacfab bumpers are slick, just a little to bulky for what i want for mine. they look a lot like the buckstop bumpers and they are one of my favorite aftermarket bumpers. |

Re: 72 k20 project
Bumpers and headlight buckets are basically the only place I like chrome. But yeah you're right it would take a lot of work to get one perfect enough for it to look decent in chrome. I'm definitely not there yet so it's just a thought lol.

Re: 72 k20 project
I like those pacific fab bumpers, just not the price. I will try to build my own for that kind of ka-ching. I'm the opposite of a few of you guys, I like shiny things.

Re: 72 k20 project
im not sure anything on the truck has been painted in gloss finish even! i heavily considered doing a flat or semi gloss on the body too. i have really good eyesight, but at the trade off of being really sensitive to bright light or flashes, so i dont really like to much shine. makes sense to be a welder huh?

Re: 72 k20 project
You need to go get your cab and parts back from the body shop then. You can spray it all with hot rod flatz and be well satisfied and save a lot of pesos. They have a mint green.

Re: 72 k20 project
The truck is pretty badass so he may go for the pink again. It's definitely worthy.

Re: 72 k20 project
You must not like that stand much then. Just send it on to Iowa and I'll get that nasty color off there for you.

Re: 72 k20 project
its already covered in black on the bottom, im sure it will be a beautiful shade of mottled pink/oil in no time.
i was offered "storage" space for it from someone already too! it may live at Windsor diesel when i dont need it, simply so i dont have to walk around it all the time. at least until i get a big boy shop. haha |

Re: 72 k20 project
Yes. it is a solid 518 medium green truck originally. body paint will be that. i haven't decided if i want to do a contrasting interior or keep it monochrome as it was originally.
obviously it wont be hard to tell it is a rather extensively modified vehicle if you are even remotely close to it, but rolling down the road i hope it gives that impression. i was going to do exterior trim in black, but i think it will look better in a more stockish appearance. |

I was trying to go with the same look and feel as you when I started the build and now it could go either way.

Re: 72 k20 project
at a certain point its just easier to let it hang out. once it gets crazy enough, its time to start highlighting it as opposed to trying to hide it. one of the reasons i am having difficulty deciding if want the machine 7075 front and maybe rear links, or just DOM and my black paint routine.

Re: 72 k20 project
Green will be sweet! I have a thing for two tone though, especially with wide steel wheels and caps.

Re: 72 k20 project
i love the 2 tone as well. since this was my grandpas truck, i am going with the original paint scheme so it still has the appearance of grandpas truck. med green isnt my first choice in colors, but i cant even picture it in any other color. this truck has been around for longer than me!

Re: 72 k20 project
That mint green color will probably grow on you. I did not use to like it but I actually dig it now. It isn't often re used in a resto so it'll set you truck off from others as well. Not like hugger orange.

Re: 72 k20 project
Yeah, you dont have a choice on color.
It is grandpa's truck after all ! I like the 518 green. Here's a pic of my new to me GMC. Gonna paint it original colors again but i'am also going to add the side stripe. Wont be as cool as yours though.

I agree that its a cool color, now. i used to not like it much at all. it grew on me. especially seeing fewer of them than most other colors.

Re: 72 k20 project
Parchment / White interior would look great with the 518 green color... but it would be hard to keep clean.. depending on how you use the truck, but yours is obvioulsly built to be used...

Re: 72 k20 project
Good choice keeping the OEM color. Single stage too maybe? The medium green interior may be a little tougher do than other colors - I'm not sure interior parts like the dash pad or seat covers are available in that color. I may be wrong on that though.
