Well ..................... Hello to Page 34 of McMurphy's Frozen Garage Build .......................................................

Mr UPS is my friend.
I was here on the computer making the above post, when I heard a noise at my front door.

Lo and behold !!

It is like Christmas, in Janurary!!
It is also official, I have a guage cluster that cost more than the entire truck surrounding it !!!


Here you may be able to see the one thing that ultimately sold me on these guages, the way they look at night !! Just the lettering and the needles light up.... ooooooo soooo smoooth !


If that one does not show up well on your 15" monitors, then hopefully this one in red (my thumb over the flash) will be good enough for you to see.



I just loved the font style, the moon tipped needles, and the classic 30-40s era style of the look they have! Every time I see these I think of the movie "Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow". Kinda cheesy I know but that retro-alternate-scifi stuff really appeals to me sometimes

been lurking about your thread for awhile now, great build you got going. i love it. currently it is a sweet toture looking at all the builds going on since uncle sam has me stuck in the sandbox, and my 64 is patiently waiting for my return,lol you have single handedly reignited my desire to get my truck done. thank you.when i get home ive got a good camera and 33.5 days to make some magic happen lmao, btw awesome gauges.

I started off with a criteria in mind when I began looking at guages, then I found these.....

I obviously have not updated this during this past week, but I just seem to run out of time!!


So Coulter, you are right the rolled steel rods really do make for a very nice looking trim, but my OCD cannot allow for something like that to be added without there being a reply to it somewhere else in the cab.
I did some trim like that in my Tempest and it has bugged me ever since. It just looks unanswered and out of place when it tries to stand alone like that.

So this is what I did:
I started with the p-side with a lenght of coat hanger to make a sort of guide for bending the steel rod. I picked the p-side by no other process of elimination other than that is the side closest to my work table....
If you are looking for scientific methodology, you are not going to find it here !!


Originally I was going to do 3 sections, the mirror of the above for the d-side, and a nice little tie-in between the glovebox and the instrument guage bezel. Then I got the great idea of just a 2 piece, as you can see below...


The view from the glove box well, and after the first pass of tack welds.


I knew my dash had been jacked with, but I had no idea it wasnt straight until I saw this:


And here it is all welded in, ready for some fill:

When I work with round rod I usually mess it up and end up having to call it "art work"

the steel rod is pretty trick. i've used it to edge out panels when removing the inner panels. it adds a lot of stability. never thought of it for trim... nice noodling murph.

A little bit of patience sure, but not so bad.
I think laying masking tape on objects that you cannot lay on a table (like doing the dash as opposed to the glovebox door) is far more tedious for me. I have learned though not to attempt it if I have had too much caffine....

Just an update on the speaker grilles real quick:
I finished them up while waiting for the bondo to set, and mounted a speaker inside for some close up glam shots so you all could see how they turned out. I have not fully assembled them because I have not ordered the foam baffle cups for the backs yet. I will probably shoot that order out tomorrow.


I am contemplating boring out that center hole as well.... just not sure how it would look, and of course once done, you either have to live with it, or make a new screen.....



Here is the dash trim mudded in, ready for sanding now.

P-side looks good ! If I had been just a tad more careful with the rod in bending and welding it in, I think buffing it out and clear coating it for a chrome look would have been very awesome.

However I am happy with the way it all turned out in the end.... more to follow guys !!

Lookin Good Brother, Move is done, just finishing up some additional construction that will take a couple more weekends, hope to be back on the project by the end of Feb... Chompin at the bit to be sure!!! Keep up the great work, and to put in my 2 cents worth, bore out that center hole for the speaker grilles...
