Re: Newbie with a new build thread
You sure dont waste any time. One question, why wouldnt 77 front springs fit your 67-72? I have 3" ground force drop springs in my 69 that started out in my 84...

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
The newer springs have the same diameter all the way up, The 67-72 have the same diameter until it gets to the top where it tapers down to a smaller size that fits inside your x-member so the newer one would flop around in there and not lock into place. It would probably hold the truck up, but could shift if you hit a pothole or something. I have a 77 I will put them in though.

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
Not sure I understand that, my stock front springs looked identical to the ground force springs except taller. Same diameter top to bottom...

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
I dug my old stockers out last night & you are right. They do taper at the very top. Now Im nervous that my drop springs will cause problems. Oh well, they havent fallen out yet. Sorry I butted in & acted like I knew what I was talking about...

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
Did some minor work last night. Had some old fuel line that I stripped of paint and sanded and polished back to a nice shine. Installed the water pump and altenator so I could run the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb. Got the line all bent around everything, but will have to wait to connect to carb because I have a holley on for now just to keep things out of the motor. will put an edlebrock on when I get the chance. This is by no means a race engine or even high performance for that matter so the better gas milage I can get the better. Will have some pictures later.

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
Some more work done today, or this weekend rather. I am using bear claw latches instead of the original ones so now I have to smooth off where the old ones were. This is what I have done so far.
spot to be filled/smoothed Made a template out of cardboard.. transfered it to som sheet metal... the passenger side is tacked in.. This is my little helper...

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
I am going to try and do the driverside tonight so long as its not raining. My chevelle is in the way for grinding and welding. I usually back it out, but if its raining, there are holes in the car that don't like water so it will just have to wait. Looks like its gonna be dry though. keep your fingers crossed for me. I have the doors left to do as well. Should be pretty straight forward.

finished up smoothing the old door latch locations on the cab. The doors will come next. Also got the tranny in, its not cleaned up yet, I will roll it outside later and degreas it. Let me know what you think.
bent up a new fuel line, I will cut to fit when I put the correct carb on. Charlie guarding my truck... another hole welded up..I think its the last one in the firewall....i hope.

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
A little more progress last night. Driver side engine mount is now good to go. The last one was stripped. I found a drive shaft in my shop that I forgot was even there. It has the correct ends for both the tranny and the rear end. I had to shorten it an inch and a half, but now it fits fine. Got to find the little "u" bolt that hold the u joints onto the axle. I know I have them around somewhere. I also bent me up a vacuum hose for the tranny. It may be in the way of the exhaust though. Just have to wait and see on that one. I will post some pictures of that later.

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
How well did that 48 fit the S-10 frame? Are you going with shortbed box on the 48? What kind of S-10 did it come from (year, short or long bed, standard or extend cab)?
Sorry for the questions, but I have a similar project that is starting out as a 47 5-window, but I'm having issues with it being an illegal immigrant. It has never been registered in the US and none of the title documents seem to match up with expected VIN (missing a digit). To make it more fun, there is no ID tag on the cab and I can't find any frame numbers. Who knows though, as it's sporting a 302 V8 and AOD (yep - Ford) from a ?? 2000 Maverick ??. They still sell those in Mexico? Anyway - I may need to start with a legal framework and 're-body' an S-10. Thanks, Herb BTW - is your frame just in primer or is goning to stay gray? I like the gray/orange contrast with the black parts bolted on! Good work on the build! Last edited by herb101; 10-01-2007 at 02:18 PM. |

My earlier measurements tell me that the s-10 frame is about 2 inches longer than the 48. I measured the 51. The s-10 frame is about an 83 - 85 extended cab short bed. Looks to me like its going to work great. I must finish my 68 first though. Its really hard for me to just work on one at a time. I think Im A.D.D. or something.lol. Adding a v8 to an s-10 frame is really easy. mine is already set up for one. I just have to bolt it in. Well a chevy small block that is.

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
Amesome - thanks. Sorry to pull it off topic (but you started it - LOL).
I'll have to look around local for one of those, but the good thing is - they should be cheap! Keep up the good work, Herb |

Re: Newbie with a new build thread
Thats ok with me. I have a AUTO addiction so talking about any car or truck I have is fine with me. I am just ready to get this truck done so I can start on another one.
