Re: Slow go

I just got done painting my 72 GMC, I know what you're going through! If I could give you some advice I would suggest removing EVERY removable part you can! The wing vents, door handles, door glass, rear view mirrors, EVERYTHING! You will get a much better finish and it will make it a lot easier to work on. You mentioned you had a bug mess up your primer, what kind of primer are you using? Is it a sand able primer? To make the finish smooth I would suggest stripping all the paint of that truck, it looks like there is a lot of rust and who knows what else is under that paint. After you strip the paint and get the steel clean you can pound out any dents you find and weld up any holes in the sheet metal, then you can use some "Bondo" on the bare steel to smooth out any dents you couldnt hammer out. Once you get the bondo sanded with a long board you can spray some epoxy or etching primer on the bare steel. I used etching primer on my truck because I had some, I think most people here prefer epoxy primer. To help smooth out all the scratches left in the steel, filler and epoxy you can use a high build sand able primer, it will fill all the slight imperfections and you can even fill some slight waves in the surface with it.
The sand able primer will become your best friend, you can sand the many large flat panels these trucks of made of and see the low spots that need more work, I am no expert by any means I am only passing on what I learned over the last six months working on my truck. Take your time and try to do it right the first time, you will inevitably make mistakes but if you take your time there will be fewer of them and that will also save you money on wasted material! What ever you do try not to get frustrated, if you get aggravated with something, walk away from it for a while, I worked for hours trying to install a transmission once, I couldnt get it lined up no matter what I tried! I walked away from it for a while and when I came back it almost fell in!
Like I said, this was my first paint job, it didnt have as much rust as your project but mine was covered with many difficult dents and wavy panels, I never did body work before so I learned as I went.
Keep moving along and dont let yourself get overwhelmed, just work on one section at a time and before you know it you will have made!
Good luck!! Aaron
Here are a couple pics of what an amature with only home made body tools can do! If I can do it, you can do it! You have shown a lot of ambition so far, keep it up!

You can fix that, just grind off the welds and realign it. The only serious problem I see is that he didnt line up the jamb first then work it around to the back. I see no reason why you can re use that piece. Next time tack the front edge first and get the bend at the jamb lined up. I put a tack every inch or so to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be then go back and fill in between the tack welds. Make sure the seam is at or slightly below the finished surface, grind off any excess and fill it with a thin layer of bondo. Try to keep the bondo as thin as possible to avoid it cracking or falling off! Before you apply the bondo make sure the steel is rust free and clean! Even a tiny bit of rust can grow fast and eventually pop the bondo off. If you are paying someone to do your welds you would be better off saving up and buying even a cheap Harbor freight MIG, I seem to remember them having one for around $150 or so. I have messed around with those little MIGs and they will weld up body panels just fine, they are very easy to learn, anyone can get a decent weld out of a MIG, it may not be a pretty weld but that is what a grinder is for!
Just take your time, you will be okay! You are going to learn a lot and will do a lot better on the next one! Good luck!

Re: Slow go

What are you going to do with a real fast truck? Burn lots of gas? I would just make it look and run a nice as possible. It's really nice to have a smooth running truck that looks and runs as new, with everything working properly and being reliable.
I love getting in my 40 year old trucks knowing they're going to get me where ever I want to go without breaking down. I very honestly would not trade my 72 GMC 4X4 or my 69 C10 for a brand new one.
If I were you I would spend my money on a nice clean truck and just cruise!
