Re: baclay9's 83' SWB Build
I have an ATV trip that we go on with a group of friends every year at this time. I will be gone on it for about 4 days or so.
If I have enough time I am going to try and tear the BB down so I can see what pistons and cam are it it. I also want to get the front hard brake lines and get them installed so that part will be finished. I don't think that will take more than a day though. I also want to get my old frame cut up and out of the way. We will see how much of that I actually get done... |

Re: baclay9's 83' SWB Build
Well, thought it was time for a little updating.
I am kindof at a standstill right now. everything is in limbo. The 781 heads are at the machine shop getting a valve job, bronze guides, and I have him installing new valve springs that will work with the new cam along with new retainers and such. I got the engine all the way apart and it had speed pro dome tops on it that were .340 dome. = too high of compression for pump gas. I have a set of .210 dome speed pro's on order that will drop my compression down to 9.5:1. Much more steerable. I also learned that I would need the harmonic balancer and flywheel that was used to balance my engine if I wanted it to be in balance. Problem with that is, the ones that were on my motor are now on my Dads crate motor. Instead of tearing his back apart to retrieve them I went ahead and ordered a new Pioneer Hi Performance Balancer and a TCI fly wheel. As soon as the pistons arrive I will send the whole thing off the be re-balanced. I found the cam I want to run and ordered it, I received it a few days ago. I went with Comp Cams XE274H. It has an advertised duration of 274/286 Duration @ .050 is 230/236 and lift is .552/.555 I believe. Should have a nice rumble. I have also decided that I am going to try out the Spin Tech pro street mufflers on this thing. I have been listening to them on Youtube and they sound really mean. I am trying to decide if I want to run 2.5" or 3" exhaust though. Everyone has an opinion on which would be better but I think it will end up just coming down to what I want to do. While I have been waiting on that to come together I found a donor truck to get all of the non-ac components off of. I will be converting my truck to non-ac. I wont have ac anyway and I think the non a/c stuff makes the engine compartment look a little cleaner. I will update again when I start getting the engine put back together. Here is the non a/c stuff I got. I am going to splice the piece of donor firewall into my trucks firewall. By claypool782 at 2010-11-17 By claypool782 at 2010-11-17 |

Re: baclay9's 83' SWB Build
Haven't got to do anything yet. Still waiting on the machine shop. I did get some more goodies though. TCI Flywheel, Pioneer harmonic balancer, and my Speed Pro pistons came in. I also got these beauties in today. Spintech Prostreet's with 3" in/out. VROOOOM!!!

Re: baclay9's 83' SWB Build
Got the bottom end of the 468 torn apart today. There is some abnormal wear on the main cap bearings. It is starting to look like they didn't line hone or whatever it is called to make sure everything was lined up good. I am getting really frustrated at this point, it is just one thing after another with this engine. Seems like they spared no expense in some places and then cheaped out in others. I know it is going to be a monster when I get it finished but it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now it is going to be a complete engine rebuild. Block is probably going to the machine shop tomorrow or Tues. I also am going to need new connecting rods as this seems to be another place they cheaped out.

Re: baclay9's 83' SWB Build
I don't know bud. I hate doing stuff that I know nothing about. It never seemed like it had as much power as the internals suggest it should. It is a good thing it is coming apart though, it had two broke rings. It was definitely doing some pre-detonation.

Re: baclay9's 83' SWB Build
Yeah definatly would have burned oil and the loss of compression would have made it not run as good.
Now wait.. what engine and internals did you take to charlie? Or did you just take the heads so far? He can recondition the rods and they will be fine, the H beam rods are going to be pricey. I just hate to see you go through all that work if you dont really need to thats all, find out what Charlie says and if he thinks stock rods will work then you have a set at my house |
