Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

Well it was between Maaco and do it myself in the garage. So I chose the garage. It is single stage crossfire. It's not perfect but I'm happy.

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

Haven't done a complete vehicle, but I did spray the bed, front bumper, grill, mirrors, roll pan, and chevy emblem. I wetsanded and buffed the whole truck. This was my first attempt at painting and wetsand/buff. Did a complete color change on this one, truck used to be blue. I've been painting misc. parts since this job. Found out it is my real passion. My next complete job will be my 68. Paint is PPG DBC base and PPG 2021 clear.

From this..

To this...

Reflection off of the right door

Almost done with this build!!

Did this paint and flame job back in 1990 or so (one of my first flame jobs. I've done about 1900 flame jobs since then)

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

I am curious about some of these paints. How many of you wet sanded and buffed it? Is that something that has to be done? I am looking for a factory type finish on my first attempt at painting.

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

Omni Dodge Prowler paint mixed and purchased at the PPG store. 2 coats base 3 coats clear. Wet sanded with a little air sander with 1000 and 1500. Buffed with Strata liquid 1000 then 3000.
And that was the easy part...

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

I repainted my Dad's 59 Chevy pickup a few years ago. I found a roof in a junkyard and that got the ball rolling for the restoration. It was a 3/4 ton stepside longbed. We cut a foot off the back of the bed. The color is Chrome Yellow.

I color sand and buff everything but, there are degrees at which you can do it. The first one I do is is very mild to just cut out any dust that may settle and to cut heavy peal that can happen depending on the weather. The next I pretty much go over the whole car to nearly show car finish except way down low on the rockers and splash panels as they don't need to be buffed. The last is show car shine which I usually do twice. First I cut it with 600 until completely flat[ as you can see it after wiping a panel dry] then I reshoot it with 2-4 more coats of clear and the usual 1000, 1500, 2000 and sometimes 3000 grit wet sanding plus the 4 types of compounding.

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

How do you get the mailboxes to close without chewing up the paint? I've painted a few mailboxes and the paint on the door/edge of the mailbox always gets chewed up.

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...

A friend of ine found te shark in a dumpster with the fins broken off. He gatered all the pieces and glassed it back up. I told him I could flame it for him, so he let me.

As for the lip on the mail boxes, it's inevitable. Just paint the box with the door closed.
