I took a small dinner break and wanted to show you guys what I've been working on. I got both of my running boards mounted. Ya'll will get a kick out of what I had to make the mounts with. I had a set of old metal bunk beds behind the shop I'm scraping and saw the bottom bunk bed rails. They were the exact width of the old mounting points on the boards. I removed the old mounts, made some new ones, and welded some arms to the bottom of the frame. Later on I will add some gussets. So for future reference, if you are building mounts for your running boards and your cab is 4" off the frame, old bed bunk rails are perfect, lol. Here's some pics. Now it's back to it and try to get the front sheet metal mounted correctly. Bed rails soon to become mounts. I cut some of the tubing down to fit the running boards, cut open one side, welded on some nuts, and then welded them to the bottom of the boards. Here's what the mounts look like before being welded to the frame and boards. I made the holes bigger on the bottom so I could get a socket in there to tighten the bolts. Drivers side mounted Mounts welded to the bottom of the board. Passenger side board. Passengers side mounted.

Re: Project No Time '49
Just wanted to add that the tubing was a little over a 1/8th inch thick so it's plenty stout and will be really solid once the gussets are welded on.

Gotta love them bunk beds. I have picked them up on the side of the road, out for garbage collection. I used the end of one set to make a rollbar (showbar) for my VW rat truck. Thanks for posting this and the pics, it answers my next set of questions I had.

I worked on the truck until 1am and me and a buddy got the front clip and hood on and lined up. I now have a rough estimate on where I need to cut the radiator support. I didn't get any pics with the front clip and hood on but here's a pic on how low it's sitting. This was with the motor and tranny in too. I'm really liking the stance. I know it'll change when I get the right wheel/tire combo but it shouldn't change more than and inch or two. Should be back on it tomorrow.

Got an hour or two in the shop this evening. Got the radiator support cut down and bolted in. Tomorrow I'll start on making some mounting tabs so I can get it bolted to the frame.
Here's a pic with the front clip and hood in place. And just a random pic.

Re: Project No Time '49
I plan to use one like this. It's a 19x22. It also has the straight bottom outlet.
I made my radiator support mounts this afternoon. They aren't mounted in solid yet but for now they will be alright until I can get the body pulled off. I'll finish all my welding and gussets then. Ignore my beautiful cuts. I plan to clean those up as well once everything is lined up how its supposed to be. It may be a little bit before I can get any more work done. I have to start on a friends '68 Chevy stepside that I've been putting off for a while now. I may squeeze in a few hours from time to time though.

Thanks! Glad to help Bill. I've done some research on several different ways these builds have been done. I'm just taking what I like and incorporating it into my own build. Some of it with my own twist.

Re: Project No Time '49
Did a little cleaning in the shop this afternoon to get ready to start on my friends '68. Had to pull the '49 out too so I could have room to work. I may actually get back on it sooner than I thought though. I'm starting on the bed but there's only 2 or 3 small dents that I have to fix and then I'm just putting it in primer for now. I won't have the rest of the truck until Feb. or March so I'll have some down time to finish up all my fitting. Anyways, thought I'd post a pic of it out of the shop. This is the first it's been out since when I had the cab sitting on the frame without any mounts. Now it all bolted down.

Re: Project No Time '49
getting there. I like your running board mounts. Its great to look back on all the photos of the build and see how far you've come along. When I got into this stuff three years ago, I had nothing and new practically nothing. Its nice to see that the hard work will pay off at some point. keep it up.

Re: Project No Time '49
Thanks 99. It feels good to have a roller now. I was looking at the pics myself the other day and it's crazy how fast this has come together over the past few months. I really don't want to stop working on it but gotta have some cash so I can work on it. Plus with having a 4 month old now, time can be limited.

Re: Project No Time '49
So what do y'all think of these wheels? I found them local and the guy only wants $75 for them and they look pristine. I'm thinking of getting them to run for a while on the '49. I like them but not sure how they would look on it. What do y'all think?

Re: Project No Time '49
Honestly, they aren't my choice, but they would fit my standard of running them for a while and being able to get my money back out of them if I decide I want something else. Can't go wrong for $75.

Re: Project No Time '49
I went ahead and bought those wheels yesterday. Come to find out it was a friend of mine selling them. They are in really good shape and for $75, I shouldn't have a problem getting my money back of them if I ever sell them. I really, really want a set of 17's steelies with baby moons but these were a little more in my budget. I know they look a little out of place but I think they will looke good once the truck is painted. I was working on my friend's '68 today and figured while I was waiting on my compressor to air up, I'd throw one of the wheels on just to see what it looks like. I think I like it. Plus I think I found the right size tires to run too. These are 235/75/15's and they fill up the fenderwell nicely. May go to a 70 series but that will be determined at a later date. Here's a pic with the wheel on. I'm already wanting to work on it again.

Re: Project No Time '49
Not my choice either, but for the price, I'd run with them. Changing wheel selection later is one of the easiest jobs on the restoration of these vehicles.

Re: Project No Time '49
Looks like I'm 0 for 3, lol. I do agree though. As I do like them, they really aren't my first choice either. The rim and tire selection I am wanting will run me close to $1700. One day I'll be running 17" steelies with baby moons and whitewalls. One day..........

Re: Project No Time '49
Impressed with your radiator support mounts but am curious as to how you fixed the nut on the bottom of the rectangle tube next to the frame. The pix sort of indicates it might be in the space between the tube and frame. Keep up the good work. Clay
